I have a self service yard (guys are dicks but part selection is good as far as 80s gm goes, mostly sedans though) and I was wondering how hard it would be to actually find a posi unit. What should I look for? I remember that G80 was the code for factory posi I think. Would the big 4 door delta 88s and electras have posi, like as part of a towing package or something? Getting a tad tired of one wheel (albeit fun) burnouts and a spool is only good for about 5 minutes.

I think he's also wondering what else out there has a 7.5 in it other than G-bodies. The first thing that comes to my mind is some S10's. Am I right?

I think all of the 7.5 posi is Auburn and with the cones are not rebuildable. There is no real way to test them in the wrecking yard unless you can rotate the real wheels and check with a torque wrench to see what the posi will hold before it releases. It may save your time and money in the long run to buy new and you can upgrade to 28 spline axles.

and they have some used ones that I assume have been checked out

not many of those are bolt-in, but if you're not scared to tackle a differential swap, this is pic is worth stickie status!
I thought he meant just the carrier and gears. I wonder what ratio is the cut off on carrier fitment in the axle housing on the 7.5? If I remember right, 2.73 is the cutoff in the 8.5. In other words, a numerically lower gear ratio will not work in a 8.5 housing that came stock with a 2.73 or numerically higher gear ratio. Please correct me if I am wrong.
