Hello everyone, as you all know the G-Body dashes are prone to crack BAD. 1 That being said I was able to pick up an original dash (different color) with almost zero cracks, from what I found only a small hair line crack on one corner of the speaker. I need to paint it to match my interior color but just curious if there is anything I can do to it to prevent it from cracking in the future? Special paint? Light layer of fiber glass, bondo, rhino liner (dont laugh). I just would really hate for this dash to crack after going through all that trouble of painting and switching out. Obviously, a dash cover would probably help but would like to not have to go that route if possible. Thanks in advance.

When I got my new Cobalt back in 2005, pretty much what I did was use Armor All once every 3 months, this including cleaning wipes in between. Dash on this car to this day is still in perfect condition. I would suggest Armor All Frequently.

I'd get a sunshade made to fit a G-body more specifically if possible. Weathertech claims to. May be a bit more money, but worth it if the car is in the sun for a good while. Ironically, and stupidly on their part, you can buy a shade to fit an 85 Monte Carlo, but not one for an 85 Cutlass. :) Around $50.

I think the newer dash boards are made from a more resilient material. And actually I have read NOT to use any sort of Armor All on these old dashes but I have also read that now a days Armor All has removed that "Chemical" that would cause the cracking.

to prevent the dash from ever cracking put it in a climate controlled room and leave it there.....

Use a sunshade when possible and treat your dashboard with a NON shinny UV protectant/ conditioner for interiors.

Definitely keep it out of the sun as much as possible. Selective parking & windshield shades get it done.

the point is the question was how to keep the dash from cracking and my answer was to that question with I think it would be the best way to prevent the dash from cracking...
