I will keep my 5.3 V8 for a few more years thanks, ( I just bought a '13 Sierra, so me being me, I will have it for about 10 years)
When I was a Line Tech at a Mercedes dealership, one of the mantras was "never buy the first year" I am sure it exists within all makes. Assuming the words four cylinder turbo are synonymous with gas mileage, well, I am not buying a fullsize pickup for the fuel economy now am I?
I have my 4 cyl Sonoma for that. I want a fullsize truck to do "Truck Stuff" call me in about 10 years and show me how well these 2.7/4 T engines did in real life.. I wouldn't mind putting one to work in my Sonoma in a few years.
Parting shot... What was the size and displacement of those famed Cummins 4BT's that powered thousands of Bread trucks and delivery vans through the years?

3.9L, diesel, and weighed in around 800 pounds to provide front end ballast in the trucks.

Compared to the new silverado engine which is gas fired, 2.7L, weighing less than 400.

I'm willing to reserve judgment until a few are on the road with more than 100k on them. However, the comment about GDI turbos getting good mileage on paper but not real life is true. If you drive them like you have a raw egg between your foot and the pedal, then they get OK fuel economy, but if you're enjoying any of the "boost" they get no better economy than a 50-60% larger N.A. engine.

Until a few months ago, I owned a Hyundai Sonata turbo, and averaged about 18-19 around town, and about 22-25 in mixed driving (EPA figs were 22/33). Plenty of power, but not super-efficient, unless I drove it like grandpa, which I didn't. Same thing with my wife's 2.0L EB Escape. She averages about 19-21 (rated at 20/30). The interesting thing I've observed with the Gen V OHV engines (V-6 included) is they all get about the same mileage, whether you're talking about the 4.3, the 5.3 or the 6.2, and are all capable of more than 20 mpg highway.

Turbo 4 cylinder that is set up for RWD and possibly a SBC bellhousing pattern...I'm in, time to start cruising the junkyards.
My first thought was the same. Would be a fantastic platform for a light RWD of any sort from "back in the day"! That or a modified FWD chassis.

I stuck with the 5.3, glad I did. Good on gas, decent power and they run forever. Don't trust the smaller displacement turbo engines, especially the first year on the market.
