BUILD THREAD 36x48x14 Shop Build Update 10/10/2024, Additional Lighting

Sticking to it, or stuck with it? And yeah, I have sort of been keeping tabs on the ongoing saga of the mclellan, although my attention can be easily diverted from it to other, maybe more intriguing, things that can and do pop up at random on the board.

As for the Q-jet boondoggle, the key here is your phrase, "Under $500 would've bought a respectably rebuilt unit by someone who knew what they were doing." The emphasis here ought to be properly laid on that "someone who knew what they were doing." In my experience, the genuinely capable are few and far between and, given their relative rarity, can tend to command fatter numbers for their work than a paltry five bills.

I'm talking real money, not that colorful pretty, but less valuable, stuff you guys use up there 😛

Besides, add up the costs of a Sniper, a new engine, and a new FI unit, besides the other changes to support it, and compare it to even a gold plated quadrajet.

Not only would the q-jet STILL be cheaper, but, it would actually run and be drivable.... two things that the poor monte has suffered a problem with thus far

Well, any Q-bog that had the misfortune to fall into my hands would end up living a long and useless life as a sandpaper weight! Had I the need to get one rebuilt, it would have to go south for the work. The current exchange is 1.33 CDN to the USD, plus you charge 3.00/gal +/-.

Gold plated, huh, had not thought of that. Thing is you would have to lay on an intermediate layer, copper probably to fill in the pores and get the gold to bond., and then wrap a chain around it so that some mook doesn't try to rip it off at the local show and shine.

Biggest point for me is that Q-crap just doesn't ever appear in the yard. They are like TH400 t-boxes, 1984 G-10 steering columns, 700R4's, and a few other items that I could name. Very high on the local unobtanium list. Last Q item that I ever scooped was a Two Barrel variant that came from an Olds??? Anyway..................

With power tour 2024 complete, there will be a few shop upgrades coming. One is an air lines system, as stretching hoses across the shop sucks. Some addition lighting over the benches and boxes, and hopefully before the winter studded and additionally insulated walls, though money will dictate that.

Small update as the fall is in full swing and winter approaches! I haven't done a compressed air distribution system yet, but the parts are mostly gathered. I did add some bench/tool box lighting to the shop using a 10 pack of ultra lightweight, twin tube 48", LED shop lights. Since I haven't finished the interior walls with drywall and additional insulation yet, I opted to use some coated wire rope with a turn buckle between walls to hang them from. This is a mostly temp solution, and the reason for the ultra lightweight fixtures.

In a few hours I got a marketplace deal, two 72" ceiling fans BNIB. I believe these have remotes, and they do have a light, though that really isn't needed.

I am currently researching mini-splits for the shop and hope to pull the trigger soon. With last winter only needing those kerosene wick heaters for warmth, and two 5500 BTU window buckets keeping the place at 68F through the summer, I think a 3 ton unit will suffice. And, with a single evaporator on the wall the fans will help distribute the air as needed. Is is a shop after all, not a house.

Did a thing, pulled the trigger on a 36K BTU Senville Mini split. I did a bunch of online research, text, reviews, videos, etc. This seemed to be the affordable-ish solution, with a good warranty and hyperheat. The parts are going to start showing up today, with the system itself by FedEx next week. I'll likely do an install video just because.

Also, I installed those 72" ceiling fans I scored. I did have to get some parts to make a ball end downrod for one, and I am missing a frosted lense for one. I don't care about the lense though, between the ceiling height and the LED light lumens, they really don't matter.

They each came with a remote control, which I set up so they are both controlled by one. I wish they were wifi, but hey, they were cheap and I needed something to circulate the air.

That's a very nice upgrade, and it's on my bucket list. Super jealous.

Every time I see one of those monsters I just think of the destruction they'd rain if they ever fell out. Can you feel them pretty good on the ground?

Heck yea, they move some air for sure. I had though about that from time to time, but they are fastened up there good!

Another update, all the mini-split parts came in. I do however have to make some spacers for the wall mount, so I ordered some plastic rod to machine down for the task. It will be a week or two before I get to install it because...

I just got 15 tri-axles of shale delivered, along with a large mini-x and large frame skid steer. I need to peel up some dirt and lay down the shale to fix up the "road" to the shop. We've just been running on the dirt and it is rutted up bad! Asphalt and concrete are out of the question. Pics to follow.

Ever thought of using asphalt millings for the road surface? Just the right thickness & some summer heat makes a nice road surface. Until this summer the one of our stock piles had a "moutain" of them that need to be regound just to haul them to the roads have the shoulders redone.
