Hello again. Not new but I last posted on here in April 2020. I was on the verge of installing the engine into the car and ran headfirst into several brick walls which derailed my project for a few years. Life has a way of rearranging priorities for you. I have had to get a local shop to help with my build and it is progressing quite well I think. My car is an 83 MCSS with 45ish K on it. It had a 383/TH350 with a 373 gear. The 383 blew a piston and I just happened to have an LY6 laying around and decided to do the LS swap. I picked up a rebuilt 4l80 out of a 3500 Savanna van and got an FTI 9 1/2 inch 3000 converter . I had the block & heads checked & surfaces trued. I had a Summit low lift truck cam & springs installed with a trunnion upgrade. Everything else is stock. It has an LS3 intake, 90lb injectors & 92mm TB.

I went with the Holley LS swap kit. Motor mounts, headers, exhaust, 4l80 trans X member & oil pan. The oil pan, headers & exhaust fit perfectly. No hammering, dinging or bending required. There was 1 exhaust hanger that wouldn't work. We found that today so will have to figure it out. Getting the trans x member in was a challenge It just wouldn't fit. I sat in a chair under the car (it was on a lift) looking at it and it hit me. The frame was bent. We massaged the frame a bit and the x member slid in place and bolted right up. I got a CVF accessory drive with AC. It looks great and has plenty of clearance everywhere. The only issue we have come across so far that doesn't have a clear solution is the rear coil is too close to the heater box. The coil wire will be hitting the box. I have simply turned the coil at an angle to compensate for now. The wiring harness I had made hooked up with no issues.

Whats left to do? Coolant lines & radiator, trans lines/fan & radiator, shifter cable to column shifter, fuel system with external fuel pump, placement (hiding) the ECM.

It's a good feeling overcoming all of the obstacles that can be faced when doing these big projects. Kudos for pushing forward.

I went back and read 29 pages of my swap thread from 2018 to 2020. It is amazing how little I knew about what I was trying to do. Several GBODYFORUM members provided valuable information and guidance. For that I am grateful. You were a great help to me even if it didn't appear that I was listening at the time.

I remembered the original thread & re-read it last night. Glad to see the latest intake choice as well. I remember the various posts from others discussing the truck intake benefits vs the sftermarket versions (especially the sheet metal options) & always said to myself 'I agree the truck intakes are hideous but wonder why nobody has suggested the OE LS3 car intake?'. What brought you to that decision?

I'm facing a similar dilemma. The 6.0/4l80e combo I picked up @ the beginning of the year will be a mild N/A combo but I strongly dislike the late model appearance on the LS powerplants & have been looking @ a carb style intake option. Unfortunately they suffer a similar TQ/HP loss @ the lower end of the curve. Not happy about that but it might be something I'll just have to overcome to keep that traditional appearance.

Hi Scoti. There were hundreds of LS intake shootouts done and the LS3 intake was always performing as well as the high dollar intakes. My friends with similar (but more hiPo) setups "were" using the LS3 intake and were happy with them. So I went with it also. I still have the truck intake and the Holley Hi Ram in the box. Both my friends are now running the carb style stand alone EFI. If I didn't have so much invested in my current setup I would seriously consider the carb style. I'm just wanting to get mine back on the road and enjoy it for awhile.

If you decide to run an external pump, then be advised hat you will be able to hear it unless you're running open headers that will force you to wear earplugs. If you do go with an external pump, then 255 Walbro will be more than plenty for NA build on gasoline. And that is the quietest external pump I've used. I run AEM 380's and they aren't terribly noisy, but I know that it's on. An Aeromotive A1000 and Magnafuels sound like a lawnmower is in the truck lol.

Whatever pump you get - steer clear of the budget knockoffs. Buy Walbro or AEM's that genuine only. Unfortunately the Bosch 044 is no longer being made - IMO by far the best external pump ever produced.

I got an MSD, 45GPH, 60PSI. I doubt if it will be as loud as the Holley Red I had running the 383 with Pete Jackson gear drive. You could hear that whine a block away.
