If you're looking at making big numbers with an SBO, ditch the 77 350, the windowed main webs won't survive. Get yourself a pre 76 block (68-71 are the best), or if you can find one, a 350 D or DX diesel block will hold 1000+ HP on the stock bottom end.

Unless you're ready to spend $800 on headers, your best bet will be W-Z manifolds. New castings can be had online for about $250. I'm running W-Z manifolds on mine, they flow about the same as a shorty header. They have individual runners for each exhaust port.

Both an Olds 350 or 403 would be a great drop-in replacement! Not with your stock trans though. It won't take it. Both can be built to make some good power, but with the 403 you have to watch your bottom end (windowed main webs), but a girdle is cheap insurance. A good cooling system will solve...
