1980 Pontiac LeMans Station Wagon - G-T-faux (stuck with it, and can't shake it... like a bad case of herpes)

I'm missing it Mike. Do you have a better photo or an arrow that points to what you're talking about? I've attached a diagram out of the GM Electronic Parts Catalog. If you tell me the number, I'll tell you what it's called and what it does. ...

I don't see it listed on that diagram? But, here... I have zoomed in and circled it in green.

And in other news I am not sure if anyone swapping in a GP dash has come across these schematics but they look pretty useful (especially for the gauge wiring (colour coded, not pinouts unfortunately):

I found these schematics very useful when installing my GP dash. Thanks to a member here. They're specifically for the gauge clusters.

I also wrote down the corresponding color codes to both plugs.

Thanks! I have been doing searches on this for a few hours now and came across that image you provided from some old threads here.

I found that Ray Buck's site "the Chevy Asylum" is down right now but found a copy of the Monte/Malibu pinouts using the Wayback Machine (http://web.archive.org/web/201010281212 ... inout.html); I took a screen shot to save here for anyone else who is looking for it.

When I go to de-pin the GP harness I will make sure to catalog the pins to connector locations for the next guy; the colour coding looks identical, just the quantities differ.

That's useful, having the numbered and color coded chart. You're right that the color codes are the same for both Chevy and Pontiac. I just reused the existing Chevy dash harness and re-pinned the plugs to the Pontiac configuration.

Thanks for that, Mike. Gotta love the Wayback machine.

The Maliburacing diagrams are also very helpful.

Kickdown switch for the trans? I don't think any G body came with a TH400, though. Looks a lot like the neutral safety switch on my manual, but that's on the clutch pedal.

I started to look for this today but ran out of time. May parts guy is back on Wednesday next week so that's when I'll know for sure. I'll tell you it looks a lot alike a turbo 400 downshift switch. I Googled one and came up with one for sale on eBay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/161023285833?ru ... 26_rdc%3D1

I don't know the history of the car but if it had a turbo 400 trans at one time, this is what it would look like. The car wasn't built by GM with a 400 but many 350's were swapped out for the more durable 400. Can you tell what color wires plug into the switch? One of your wires appears to be red? Looks like the exact same switch but not the same bracket on the pedal.

And that explains that... the previous owner had a 455/TH400 combo in the before selling it off. And yes, the wires are white and red.

Thanks for the effort in figuring this out!

Since I am knee deep in wiring...

Does anyone know of a "how to" for wiring in a remote starter? I have one on the shelf ready to go, but a little guidance is always nice.

and...

Does anyone know if any replacement LEDs for inside of a GP dash cluster (specifically the turn signals, SES, high beams, etc...)?

Seems uncommon for anyone to install a remote starter in these cars - as my search still comes up fruitless, oh well; and for some reason when people put LEDs in these cars the installation is soooo poorly documented?

Since I am only interested in doing some of the interior light here are the cross reference bulbs:

Dash Cluster Lamps (seat belt, hi-beams, turn signals, choke, SES, etc) were 161 or 168 bulbs, are now all 194 LEDs;
Step/Courtesy Lights (in the foot wells) were 631 bulbs, are now 1156 LEDs; and
Step/Courtesy Lights (midway under-dash) was a 906, is now a 921/T5 LED.

I have spent much of the weekend in the garage with my butane torch, alternative rock, wiring schematics from four different cars, some flux and solder, and a lot of electrical tape - building an interior harness that is as much 1980 LeMans (gauge cluster, HVAC, and under-dash lighting), as it is 1987 Monte Carlo (main harness, under-hood power/lights, and interior accessories), 1991 Camaro (map light rearview mirror and remote power mirrors (because my wife is 5'-5" and I am not)), and 2002 Camaro (the LS1 and BCM swap).

The only things I am still working on integrating are six Speed Hut gauges, the MSD window switch for the nitrous (and the circuits for arming, heater, purge and firing the system), and the remote starter. Too easy. 😉
