Then yesterday i got to work on the fenders to remove some rust issues i was having on the bottom sides. Its always the areas where the leaves get collected and hold moisture.

so here i cut out the rotted piece.

damn you rust!!! damn you!! lol

Re: 1982 El Camino build *New Member The Fonz*

another rotted out piece to take care of

then i grinded all the trim holes to weld up.

so today i will weld those patch panels in , weld up the holes, and then get started on the other fender but that one is not to bad, a little bit less work to do. also gotta patch up the antenna hole since im going with windshield antennae. After i get all this welded up i going to have sand down the inner part of the fenders again to repaint the HOK silver since i already painted them the tarnished silver. ill take advantage to repaint the mirrors again when i do that. and also need to coat the iside of the fenders with some rust incapsulator to finish it off before i mount them to the car.

and the list keeps going and going.... whats funny is this was supposed to be a quick scuff and paint .... but it never is. im already knee deep might as well do it right rather than half assed lol 😀

That is coming along nice.....Your saving a ton of money buy having the know how to do it yourself!!! It never seems to bad until you get right into it I can tell you that for sure..Recenlt got my Monte painted and it didn't look bad before that, there was alot of hidden spots I must say. There are some progress pics in my gallery. What motor do you have in that 'Elky? Any othert plans besides the paint/body work??

Thanks JBreu!! That's the idea behind my build by trying to do as much as i can without having someone else do the work for me. If i dont know how to do something i look it up online, study it, analyze it, ask around, and if i still think i cant do it then it off goes to the experts. For upholestry i have never done, but i know i can redo the headliner, carpet, repaint some of the trim, but the seats i wouldnt be able to do since i have no sewing skills or a upholstry sewing machine ... if the other guy can do it, so can i .... well sometimes or ill die trying lol ....

after the paint and body work is done im going to redo the interior all black, currently dark blue. im going to put in new carpet, new headliner, either repaint the trim or recover them in black leather or black suede or whatever i think looks good 8)

engine wise im good. it has a 350 rebuilt before i bought it and has nice mild cam and purrs real nice with the dual exhaust flow masters. plan to either move up to a carbureted 454 or go fuel injected ...also i still need to upgrade the rear end to a posi and drop in a new gas tank .... it never ends or does it ??? lol

Fonzie,
Thanks for the tidbits of motivation... We can never get enough of that stuff.. I'm liking the silver...very nice.
Man, I know what you mean about finding more little rust areas. There's areas that I forgot I went over with fiberglass, and it seemed to last for quite awhile. well this time I ended up digging it all out and welding in metal. Much better this time around.
You're absolutely right, the longer you're at it, the more you find.. :?
But as they say, now is the time to catch all that crap before laying down any paint. And like you, i'm opting to do it all myself.
No more cheap *ss Maaco paint jobs.
Keep up the good work, brother.

alright so i ahve been busy welding up the patch panels, welding up trim holes, and patch up the antennae hole since im going with one on the windshield.

got the backside of the fenders all sanded down to get ready to repaint the HOK silver. so ill probably get the fenders painted this weekend then put some rust encapsulator on the back side and undercoat and install the fenders onto the car.

then i need to scuff the underside of the hood that im going to install to paint in black and also install it onto the car hopefully all that is done by this weekend..... i hope :? so much to do and so little time but its gotta get done.

and your right jack no sense in paying a Maco paint job when we can do it ourselves.

Fonz,
I hope you found a fairly cool place to work. I feel for you folks in Texas and Oklahoma. That is some god awful hot weather you people have been encountering.
Glad to see that you're making progress regardless. Keep up the good work. 🙂

yeah the way i see it its been hotter than hell the past three months and it wont give up soon. Then when its winter the same weather excuse comes up but that its too cold.so i might as well go sweat off the extra unneeded pounds lol.

heres an article of how the drought has dried up lakes and stuff here in texas.

Yeah, I know man. Crops goin' to sh*t, old mature oaks withering from the heat, and a terrible drought on top of that.
And you're right. Last winter was also on the extreme side. It seems as though there's a short window of opportunity between summer and winter. I guess if you keep well hydrated, work smartly, run fans, and work in the shade, you'll be okay.
They were hoping that the tropical storm would bring a substantial amount of rainfall. Looks like it didn't happen.

All right guys time for a little update. i havent had time to update with posts and pictures but i have been busy getting things done on the elco...

so i have the underside of the hood painted black... by the way a little tip if your running a little low on some satin black paint one stage acrylic or whatever type of paint you use... you can use basecoat paint which is what i did with the underside of the hood since its temporary and i didnt have time to go buy the correct paint. it dries to a nice satin sheen and should hold up ok with it not being exposed to the sun. also the edges are painted silver so this puppy is ready to mount.

i also have the inside of the fenders painted with the HOK silver and i applied some eastwood rust encapsulator and a coat of under coat. sooo now these are also ready to mount 😀

now that all of the inside of fenders and hood are painted i can now mount them and line everything up and finish up the little bodywork left on these. once thats done the whole car will get maybe one coat of high build primer so that i block sand the car again to get nice and straight... still need to remove the rust on the back windows... finish the header panel...

also im debating on wether to get fiberglass bumpers.... i know i can cut and tuck the front one seems simple enough and i think would look good without spending extra money, the only thing i dont like is the grooves the steel bumper has, i might place a strip of metal all around to smooth the bumper out like the one of the fiberglass look.

now the rear bumper i think i might just tuck it in closer to the body and paint it. or just buy the fiberglass tucked one ... but i just hate the bumps that it leaves with fiberglas... i would rather put in a steel one like what LScustom is doing to his and that totally removes the bumps and then i could put in some custom LED lights on the pan ..... viewtopic.php?f=7&t=30272&start=225 .... but i think i'll leave that for a later date .... i just wana drive my car already... i miss driving it 🙁
