OK, so somebody else has an '86 salon so now I gotta ask the question. Why is it mine has different tail lights from every other Cutlass I ever seen? Don't get me wrong, I like the look of my tail lights but I have no idea why I never see them on any other Cutlasses.

The door ding strips look better than door dings... But I will agree with you, they look better without.

I'd leave them on for the time being, as with aged paint, it will likely have faded around them, and then there will be a darker stripe where they were... or even worse, they take some of the paint with them!

Beautiful car... Sucks about the rust on the bottom of the doors, but it's so common it's hard to complain about.

So what are your plans for it?

Along the way, someone swapped them for a set of 81-83 tail lights. I would check for accident damage or water leaking in the trunk by the lights as they may not have been properly sealed when they were installed. Also, your back up lights are incorrect for a 86 as well and also come from a 81-83.

BTW, there are I believe 4 or 5 variants to the 81-88 Cutlass Tail lights: 81-83 Chrome, 83 Hurst/Olds with black trim, 84-86 (85?) chrome with pot metal rocket emblem, 84 black Hurst Olds, and 86 or 87-88 chrome with plastic rocket emblem that is red and chrome with a clear plastic overlay.

No leaks. No accident damage. The car is essentially still new. Never been winter driven. Hardly gets driven at all for that matter. It's a curiosity.

When i got the car,it came with like 8 sets of reverse lights, one pair was the 81-83 reverse lights,i thought they looked good on the car,so i put them on for awhile and then i thought that the original ones looked better so I swapped them for the 84-88 reverse lights.Everything on my salon is original right now,the reverse lights and the taillights, which are correct year 86-88 taillights.

the one rear ding strip is pealing off,as for plans, sometime this year i plan to put a 1973 olds 350 rocket in it,put 373's in the rear, eventually restore the whole car.Basically I want it to be a sleeper.I also need to replace the trunk lid with the extra one i got with the car, since mine so rusted out. When I first went and looked at this car,the first thing i looked at were the doors,as soon as i got it feb.28 I went to autozone and bought some rust fix spray paint and basically sprayed the doors for 3 weeks straight! Now it has black colored rust instead of piss yellow!
