I would check for accident damage or water leaking in the trunk by the lights as they may not have been properly sealed when they were installed. Also, your back up lights are incorrect for a 86 as well and also come from a 81-83.

BTW, there are I believe 4 or 5 variants to the 81-88 Cutlass Tail lights: 81-83 Chrome, 83 Hurst/Olds with black trim, 84-86 (85?) chrome with pot metal rocket emblem, 84 black Hurst Olds, and 86 or 87-88 chrome with plastic rocket emblem that is red and chrome with a clear plastic overlay.

I'd leave them on for the time being, as with aged paint, it will likely have faded around them, and then there will be a darker stripe where they were... or even worse, they take some of the paint with them!
Beautiful car... Sucks about the rust on the bottom of the doors, but it's so common it's hard to complain about.
So what are your plans for it?
