I'd love to find a 403 for it sometime, but right now I just want to get it reliable with a little more power 🙂. What was the factory HP rating for the 307?

140 HP Vin Y 180 HP Vin 9

It looks like mine is the 140 hp vin Y. What was the difference in the vin 9 to make 40 hp?

Thanks for the info. Should I just refer to the 87 specs for mine? I have found several parts for 87s, but I can't seem to find anything for an 88 model (headers, cams or intakes). I've been told the 88 g-body cars were mostly just leftover 87s, but I didn't know if any changes were made for 88 only?

Should I go with short or long tube headers on the 307? I had my eye on a set of Headman short tubes, but I wasn't sure which would make more bottom end torque. I'm not really lookin to build a high rpm roadburner, just somethin that can get up to cruising speed a little quicker 😀 .

If you really want to deal with the hassle of headers, then you mind as well go for the long tubes for best performance, especially since you will end up reusing them when you eventually get a bigger motor. With that being said, don't expect much from any headers on a stock swirlport 307. True duals will help but you don't need headers to go true duals.

Documented proof of headers on a swirlport 'high output' 307 in an 87 442; Ran 16.7 stock ( lame....) and with nothing more than true duals, it went 15.8. Headers were then added and it only dropped another .2. With a VIN Y engine, I would expect smaller improvements. No, this was not my 442.

That's a good thing because you aren't going to be able to sqeeze very much out of a stocker 307 with 7A heads.

P.S. Due to port mismatch, you can't use any other intake than the A5 you have right now. Yes, the swirlport 307 is VERY limiting in any performance application.

I found a performer rpm dual plane intake for an 87. Would that fit my 88?

No.

The 85-88 307 VIN Y engines are all the same. Eternally they look like any other SBO, but the intake has very small runners and ports. Those tiny ports match up well to the tiny inlet ports of the 7A 'swirl port' heads. Any intake manifold other than your stock A5 will have much bigger ports, so they won't match up to your tiny head ports. So while an aftermarket intake would physically bolt on and appear to be fine on the outside, internally things would be anything but good. This is one of the reasons why no one has a 'fast' later model 307. They just have no redeming qualities for performance. Sad but true.

Well that sucks lol. Is there anything I can do to the lil guy to wring at least a few more ponies out?
