200-4r codes

what are the codes on the trans that tell you the model it was originally built for? somebody swapped the trans in my 87 monte ss to one from a car with a 2.56 rear gear. i want to find how long i have till it explodes!
 
There is a tag riveted to the trans housing that has a 2 letter code on it, IIRC. IF you can post that code, it will help someone to tell you what the trans came from. How long it will last all depends on how you treat it and what kind of power you put through it. Without knowing at least what engine it has there is no way anyone can make a judgment call on that.
 
400-450 horse and torque 383ci. and i am beating on it. hell, i've got a bet with my brother on what i'll kill first--the trans or the rear.

If you have an SS then it came equiped with a 8.5 inch ten bolt rear end. If it has posi then it should take a lot of abuse. The same rear ends came in GNs and 442/Hurst Olds. These rears are known to provide reliability into the 10s if equiped right (some GNs take em into the 11s in stock form). My money is on the 200r4 going out. My buddys 403(dyno proven 425 HP at the crank) equiped Cutlass has gone through 3 so far and is still running the 7.5 with no problems. If it goes out this may help.

Yeah, the MCSS came with the 7.625 rear axle in either a 3.42 ratio or a 3.73 with posi optional. It is almost the same as the 7.5 rear but with a slightly larger ring gear. I believe the first year SS (83?) had the 3.42 with the TH350 trans and the 7.5 axle instead of the 7.625, but I am not sure so don't quote me.
 
83-early84 SS's had a TH350 trans with 3.42 rear gear, then they swithced to the TH200-4R trans in 85-88's with a 3.73 rear gear. Posi was an option in all years. 7.625 axles in all years, never an 8.5 :?

7.625 is really no different than a 7.5 They both will take 400+ torque & HP.
 
sorry. I was under the assumption that all GM Hi-Po cars came with 8.5s. My vote still goes for the transmission assuming tht you have posi.
 
since i figured out that the trans is NOT from a monte thats where my money is too. hopefully it will be spectacular when it goes. (i really want a new performance built one but can't justify it yet)
