i'b been looking into a stronger trans. to match up with the 455 i bought. i have a freshly rebuilt 200-4R in the cutlass now. would it be cheaper to just build up my transmission or buy a stronger 4 speed?

Check out extremeautomatics.com, anyone that has one of Lonnie's transmissions in their car will tell you the same.

What parts were put in the rebuild? How much torque is the 455 putting out?

That’s the thing i don’t know what is in my transmission. All i have are the receipts from the previous owner when i bought it. It just said transmission overhaul/replace $1100 and 1 exhaust pipe $300. I don’t know how much i trust it though, all the work was done by muffler mart.(is it me or do those prices seem a little absurd)
I plan on the 455 making around 500 hp. and torque or at least get close to it.

As others, I suggest extremeautomatics also. I am almost ready to purchase their stage1 2004r for my build. I know quite a few GN guys that swear by lonnies work.
Ive read and heard nothing but great things about them and their products.
It would be very difficult for me to be comfortable putting 500hp through an unkown (performance wise) build on a 2004r done at a muffler shop.

If you want to know what this trans needs and what each part cost visit the PATC website you will find it will take a lot more than $1100 to build a long lasting 200r4 to handle 500hp.

If you don't intend to do much mileage perhaps a th400 would be your best bet, it needs a modified mounting to fit in a G Body, but it was designed to deal with big block torque from the drawing board.
However if gas mileage is a concern then a properly built (with a properly expensive bill!) 200r4 is a popular way to go, plenty of good transmission builders know how to do it properly.

Roger.

Perhaps we should all just assume 6 month old threads have been resolved....
