Gents,

Basically I am just looking for an opinion. My 200 4R started slipping hard in second and in always had a slight slip in third. I never did like the feel of a stock 200 4R. I am seriously thinking about getting a TH350 built for my car. I am so decided on it that I already sold my Lightning Rods. I feel that the TH350 is stronger and easier to build, I don't travel much. The car is used to cruise around town, short trips and the odd 1/4 mile track run.

I run a GM Performance 290/350 with some goodies, pretty mild. And a 3:42 posi rear end, 28 spline. I want something that`ll shift consistently and firm. 2500-2800 stall give or take. The car is a 1986 Cutlass.

If somebody can come up with a good build recipes for my 200 4R that I can show my transmission guy, maybe I`ll stick with it. Brands of service kits, converters...

I feel that I don't like the governor and TV cable setup maybe.

Can you guys talk me out of the TH350 swap?

Thanks in advance!

Talk to chris @ck performance, lonnie @extreme automatics, and Dave Husek @tubo buick performance also art carr from cpt has built them a long time. These guys will build a trans to last.

I just built my own and picked the brains of Chris and dave husek.

You'll want the od especially if you're on the highway even though you are mostly cruising. Plus you don't need all the extras. You can do a stock rebuild a good shift kit from one of the above builders a grand national servo should or the transgo 2004r hd2 kit which had the servo included and maybe an art carr hardened forward drum for a little peace of mind.

Going from a 200-4R to a TH350 is a downgrade. Just get it rebuilt and make sure the TV cable is properly adjusted. I got my MCSS for dirt cheap because it was believed the trans was shot. I added some trans fluid, readjusted the tv cable, and drove it home. Drove it from TX to GA twice with no issues.

I run the same motor and a TH 350 but your rear gears are much better than mine. (3.42)
Mine are 2.41 And even though the car cruises well it needs numerically higher gears like yours.
so loosing the over drive might be a bit of an issue but you will not see much difference other
than maybe worse gas mileage with the th350. These are strong *ss transmissions.
2004r can be a great transmission and bring big bucks when for sale. Just for kicks and giggles
I run a 2200-2500 stall B&M converter in mine and an adjustable shift modulator.
As long as your foot is in the pedal the shifts are firm and near undetectable. And I run full synthetic
B&M trick shift fluid. Yours should work great with the TH 350 and your rear gears.

If you plan on just cruising around town with no highway driving you should be fine with the th350. I have and olds 350, 3:73 rear gears and I just swapped to a 200-4r due to this. With the the th350 at 60mph the motor was running around 3000rpms and at 70-75 on the interstate would run upwards of 3500rpms. It was very loud and annoying listening to plus it probably wasnt the greatest for the motor to run at that rpm for extended amounts of time. The 200-4r I just put in at 60 runs 2100rpms. So much better for crusing and I'm not going deaf In the car.
