During my engine swap, I'd like to change the torque converter on my 200-4R to something with a higher stall speed. The car is an '87 so I'd assume the same for its stock trans. Summit and Jegs sell B&M and Hughes converters but they're listed as "'81-'84" models. What changed in '85 that makes my trans any different? Anything? Are they only basing the years off of the more popular 700r4 which it also fits?
Also, would there be any harm in not running a lock-up style converter? This car is meant to still be a summer highway driver with occasional strip/autoX use. Is an extra 150 bucks for a lock-up converter really worth it? I'm not even sure how to hook one up or if the one in my car still works after I changed the carb and dist. :?:
I can provide more details about the engine and future drivetrain plans if necessary. Any input is appreciated.

Im not too sure about your first question but a lock up converter is definantly a good thing. When it goes into lock up it lowers your engines RPM, allows the trans to run cooler, and you get better gas mileage. B&M and a couple other manufacturers make torque converter lock up kits that any trans shop should be able to install if youre unsure how to. That's just my 2 cents.

After 84, the 700R4 changed from the same convertor to the 30 spline. That is why you see the 81-84. Summit is not the cheapest by far. CK trans, Edge convertors and PATC(raptor) have much better priced convertors. I bought the base Raptor convertor, traded it to a guy and he has flogged it, no issues. They have many power levels and fast reasonable shipping. I bought the base generic purple convertor from Oregon transmission, blew up with slicks on my low compression 403.
