How hard is it to come across one of these trannys? I've seen more of them behind 307 olds than I have chevys. So is it better to look at pontiac and olds when i go to the local junkyard? I considered the 700-r4 but heard its more for trucks and more of a pain since its not a direct swap.

Also, is there an aftermarket shifter for the 200-4r? I'm running a 350 with a b&m starshifter and 373 gears. Running this car on the highway pisses me off to no end because of the high rpms. I know I can probably find one of these around here for 200$ or less and get it rebuilt for a good price. I saw some in the "For Sale" section up here but they are all $600+ and I paid 500 for my 350 with the shift kit. So to pay that much for a transmission that is probably not rebuilt seems to be a bit much.

And how reliable are these transmissions? Are they known to overheat or have any other issues?

2004r's are good trans but there are some differences. Mine is one of the ones for sale and its out of a Turbo Buick. So it has a larger 2nd gear band, a different governer and servo plus a valve body just for the TB's. Stock ones handle around 400hp and the ones needing rebuilds go for 300-400 just for the parts inside. Bonus is that they can be built to handle a ton of power. Plus i dropped mine down to $500 obo. 😀
