301 4V how did it compare ?

My Car was bought from Used Ford dealer from a Little old Lady Trade in.
I didn't know what was in it until it cracked a head and My Moms Husband( Past Away in 2012) told me to take it to his friend who works on cars..
The guy told me it had a 301 in it but it came with a 265 when it was new (by the Vin Code), so the original owner must have replaced it.
Long story short, He put a Used 301 in it and I drove it for about 2 or 3 years.
I thought it was quick, Smoked a Cutlass with a 307 in it.
Decided to put a 4V and intake on it in place of the 2V and intake. Big Mistake, slowed the car down like others have said.
Decided to Cam it, ordered a Comp Cam 268, lifters, Roller Rockers and springs and a Ukrainian friend from work put it in, Big Mistake, he didn't no anything about Pontiacs he thought it was a Chevy and didn't set the Valve adjustment right, plus cam was to big.
The car never ran good again so I but a 400 in it myself and of course had to get rid of the Metric 200thm in favor of a 375thm.
Looking back I would have just changed the rear 2.29 gears to a 3.05 rear gear and left it along.
Got allot of Mechanical Training on the 301 so I have no regrets.

The little motors. 305 307 301 .can be made to perform better. You have a better chance with the 305sbc as it takes all the same parts as the others. And it has great aftermarket support. The 307 is the second in line with aftermarket support. Your pretty much stuck with the stock heads but can work on them. And now to the 301 it has been left in the cold. No aftermarket support except valve train and cam.

Back in the 1990's, my co-worker had an '87 GN and blah blah blah'd on and about how fast they were, so I told him I'd race him at the local 1/8 mile in my '92 dodge dakota (318 5speed open rear end club cab) because my 5.0 Mustang convert would have killed him. First race I beat him by a car length, second race he had me a by a fender, third race he beat me by a car length. My Dakota only ran 10.2's in the 1/8, so my coworkers '87 GN was still embarrassingly slow.
A worked 301 beating a GTA with no timeslip data proves nothing, just like my Dakota beating an '87 GN proved nothing (other than my co workers '87 GN was a turd).
The 301 with a turbo block, real worked Pontiac heads, custom modified or cast intake with a normal Pontiac crank are strong and make big power in a light package. Unlike the weak, small bore Olds 307 and tiny bore sbc 305, it can be a decent displacement without being horribly under square. Eliminate the awful crank and heads and you have a decent platform.
I know, but it was glory only in the guy's mind, not in the real world.
Like my co-worker with the '87 GN.
