I'm currently running a summit .442/.465, 110 LSA, 272/282 duration cam. This is matched up with a pair of iron 202/160 333882 heads with minor port work, edelbrock performer intake, and a 600cfm or so edelbrock carb. My main question is what is a good cam that will work very well with the 202 heads?

I want to be able to drive this car as well and still have the ability to be competitive in racing. How large of a cam can I go with before the heads start constricting my performance?

Re: heads and cam combo question

well if this is a 350 i would go with a comp cam 270H magnum if it larger 383 or above 280H magnum, you get pretty good result with both, anything larger than those then you be way in the top end for power.

That's a free program from comp cams that recommends a cam for you using specs you input. I believe you will be able to fill out all the information. It does actually almost exactly what you asked for. Depending on your application, street/strip or what have you, it recommends the cam that gives the highest hp/tq combination with the heads/exhaust/intake/engine/fuel system that your application has.

It was a god send when I was deciding what cam I was going to use.

Re: heads and cam combo question

It all depends on how much rpm you want to turn. My brother ran a 280H in a 350 in his camaro it was a great cam and it make good power the only disadvantage is the hydrolic lifters arent goin to turn over about 6400rpm. He also has a 4 speed on a 3.08 gear. if you are running an automatic I would say you would need a minimum of 2500 stall in the converter. But that is by no means unstreetable I'm running 2800 stall and I drive my car daily in all types of weather. if you want to turn more rpm i would recomend a solid lifter cam. like mentioned above you can contact Comp Cams and they will recomend a cam for you as will Summit and Crower

Re: heads and cam combo question

it will also depend on exactly what heads you have and how/where they flow. you should try and find out what company/model they actually are, then get the flow numbers and put that into the cam program previously linked.
FWIW stock vortecs never came with 2.02/1.0 valves, but the bowtie vortecs did.

Re: heads and cam combo question

I finally popped the valve cover this weekend and pulled the numbers. The heads have the cast number 3338882 and E754 above this cast. I believe these origionally came with 1.94 valves but not sure. So anyone have a clue on these heads and any possible specs? That way I can get an idea of what a good cam would be for my set up.

Re: heads and cam combo question

well, 882's came on just about everything back in the day. they are a good head for street use if you dont have a bunch of compression or really high expectations. they are fairly small in the intake runners, but the exhaust runners on the other hand are well planned out and flow a bit more than would be expected. i would say that they are in all actuality about as good as the heads i have on my turbo motor, if not better due to the better exhaust runner. mostly 1.94/1.6 valved heads.

Re: heads and cam combo question

if you havent installed them yet, i would suggest portmatching them to the intake. just simply deburring the intake runner and smoothing the lip into the runner can dramatically increase the efficiency of the head. they should be just fine.

Re: heads and cam combo question

I have already been running these heads for about 60-80k. I'm fixing to take out the drivetrain to do maintenance and am contemplating doing a cam swap. I pretty much destroyed the tail shaft housing of my 350 transmission cause i didn't check the needle bearings in my u joints caps and the driveshaft vibrated to the point that it broke the tailshaft housing apart.
