wahiawa, hi
ive heard lots of different opinions. but who from experience can tell me whats up. i have a 350 with a 350 turbo trans. i am seriously considering swapping for a 200-4r with a california performance transmission rebuild kit, and a b & m shift kit. in addition i am planning on going to a lim-slip posi w/ 3.73. the 200-4r and the rear axle are out of a 86 monte carlo ss...any opions?

GM's opinion was that the 2004R was good enough to go behind the turbo Buick cars and the 89 Turbo Trans AM, and that is good enough for me.

If you have the trans built to a street strip version that can last behind a turbo regal then you should be good to go. Just run a chevy converter and you are done.

You'll appreciate the overdrive as well. The car will take off very similarly to the TH350 since the gear sets are close to the same.

skip the B&M shift kit and go with Trans-go instead ... handsdown reguarded as the best kit for the 200-4rs

Go with the CPT and you cant go wrong and i agree on the TransGo shift kit, thats what i have and love it. Maybe a nice 10" converter to go with it. If you could find a 8.5 posi out of a TR that would be ideal too.

I'd be going with something other than a 373 rear end if it's a daily driver. I've got 342 posi in mine with a 200R4 but IMO they're a little tall for my liking. I'm putting in a 308 posi this comin weekend

I would think a 3.08 gear behind a 200-4R would be too tall a gear and would probably lug the engine in 4th gear/lockup .
Unless you do a good deal of freeway driving at high speed.

A 3.42 gear with a 200-4R would probably be a better all around combination.

These variables would also depend on your engine and level of tune it's in. Hotter cam, etc.

a 342 is a taller gear then a 308.....and a 308 will definitely not lug the engine in 4th gear unless you have a set up to drive around town in 4th....

I always thought a numerically lower ratio is a taller gear. That's why I'm currently running 3.08's instead of the 3.42's.
No overdrive...TH-350.

Everyone calls them differently. Gets kinda confusing. Generally a high number( say 3.73) is considered a short or low ratio. And a low number(say 2.41) is called a tall or high gear ratio. As far as 3.08's with a 2004r transmission, remeber that gm put 2.73's with the 700r4 in the camaro. Although with my cam it did seem to lug a bit when locked up with the 2.73's.

I had 2:41's in my car and loved them on the highway. I find the 3:42's are great around the city but on the highway the revs are too high for my liking and they kill the gas milage. I'm also getting rid of the 200R4 and replacing it with a T5 WC so the 3:08's should be real nice. GM used the 3:73 in the Monte SS to make it launch quick so people would think the car was fast. If you have some power in the engine you don't need those gears to make it move, after all the new vettes performance rear end is 2:73.....
