Hey guys, ive bought a 355 i have dual exhaust2", im runnng my quadra bog carb 3:73 posi rear end and rebuilt 200 r4, and i need opinions on what intake to run with egr provisions to keep the green police happy out here. I know my options are limited but i dont really know what one would work best on this new engine i bought.
this is the listing ,

fully rebuilt 355 cu SB Chevy engine . All new and fresh . Although designed for street use it received all the same prep work as our all out race engines . The block is a early 2 bolt , bored and honed with a deck plate , alighnhone mains , decked square .
Fully balanced rotating assembly , Flat top pistons , Molly rings , HI Pres oil pump , pick up , steel collor drive , double roller chain .
Brand new pan and timing cover . Comp Cams CS 279 H-107 Thumper series cam shaft , 441 casting 2.02/ 1.60 valve cyl. heads . Has all new bronze guides , Comp valve springs , HT locks and stainless roller tip rockers .

Re: 355 intake choice with egr ?

so far ive found,
300-64 holley idle - 6000 rpm
3706 edelbrock idle - 5500rpm
52009 professional products idle - 5500rpm

By the looks of the operating ranges of these intakes im leaning towards the holley.

and then i read this on summit....
Dual plane Holley Street Dominator intake manifolds are designed to exceed the performance of most OEM 4-barrel intake manifolds. With their low-rise or medium-rise configuration, divided plenum, and dual plane runner layout, they provide excellent low and mid-range power output--from idle up to as high as 5,200 rpm. They can take several carb types and sizes, and will enable you to maximize street performance.

Re: 355 intake choice with egr ?

I've run the non-EGR version of that Holley and liked it. It's squarebore so you can't bolt on a Qjet. The Performer is okay. The Professional Products is pretty much a Performer knock-off.

Re: 355 intake choice with egr ?

crap, so ive got an entire 2 manifolds to choose from !! and they both perform the same lmao. With emission laws getting more strict you would think someone would be designing some air gap, dual plane, maybe single plain good performance intakes with egr provisions....

Re: 355 intake choice with egr ?

I used JB Weld putty to glue my EGR with bolt heads glued in place to an Edelbrock air gap and ran a plugged vacuum line to the carb. I painted the JB putty with aluminum engine paint and when you look it it it looks like it should. The rules are it has to be in it's place and they can't check o see if it is operating. But is you do want one and there is no provision on the intake you can always weld a bong into the exhaust and run an EGR set up from there

Re: 355 intake choice with egr ?

The bong goes where?

Actually, that's pretty crafty. The JB weld option just might work. I'm not sure how savvy your inspectors are up there. In my area they don't have a clue. For pre-'96 cars all they do is roll a little creeper with a mirror on it under the car to see if it has a cat (doesn't have to have anything in it) and test the tailpipe emissions at idle. When I ran my Vanagon through, they actually looked under the middle of the van for the cats. The supervisor reminded the guy that the engine was in the rear. He rolled the mirror back there and said, "Oh, there they are." He was looking at the heat exchangers. It didn't have a cat on it. I can only imagine how confused they'd be if they had to do an underhood inspection.

Re: 355 intake choice with egr ?

as far as savvy inspectors they stopped me when I have an intake on my 305 that had no EGR provision on it. The guy argued with me that the plate covering the heat riser for the choke was a cover for my missing EGR. I told him I had vortec heads so there was no EGR port in the heads. If he knew what he was doing he would have asked where the EGR was coming up from the exhaust but he didn't. He gave me a $385 ticket for altering the emissions but that was tossed out when I showed up in court with a set of vortec heads and an EGR set up from the exhaust. It didn't even make it to a trial, he withdrew the ticket. If everything looks in place then they don't ticket you. The EGR that I have bonded to the intake has made it through 3 summers and no cracking

Re: 355 intake choice with egr ?

that sounds like a plan, i was thinking that when i had my 062 vortec heads, i traded them towards the engine though thinking that these heads that are on it would be much easier to find an intake for and the vortecs were just pulled of a scrap truck. I didnt know if they were cracked or anything. This being said then what are reccomendations on a good intake for my engine ?

so after digging into it i think the intake to best suit my needs would be the edlebrock 7104. Any opinions positive or negative feed back ? I priced it through my account at Partsource and was quoted 199 plus tax. And what will i need to do with my quadra jet carb on this new set up ? its my original carb off the 305. I installed a new gasket kit and accelerator pump last year. Thanks Dave

I have a friend locally who is well known for his quadrajets and he's built a few of mine tailored to my engine and how I want to drive the car. If you want I can get you in touch with him and see what you can work out. He is very reasonable with his prices.
