I did my Explorer with spray paint. We did it 2-tone - black and red. We also sprayed on clear coat. By the time I was done it had like 3 coats of paint + 2 of clear. It's held up well so far and is easy to clean. It got nicked and the fix took my 5 minutes. There is something to be said for it, and the truck gets compliments. For a 20 year old truck it does not look so bad. I'd say by the time I was done it cost me about $100, between paint, clear coat, tape, sand paper, and other materials. We also used spray on chrome to fix the grille and other areas. There are pics up on my blog: highway-hacker.blogspot.com if you want to look.

I can't believe your flat black lasted that long, though with the right care perhaps. My friend flat blacked his rodeo, then sold it to another friend and he wheeled the crap out of it. After scrubbing the mud off enough times it turned greyish.
And I can't complain about that acclaim. It was a great car and I wish I still had it. I'd never have sold it if I could have afforded to by my truck without selling it.

I'd go Implement paint from tsc (35-45 a gallon?) before rustoleum. I use Implement for my floors and other various things, add the hardener and it's pretty tough (takes quite a long tim to fully cure though). I did the bumper on my jeep in satin black, been a year and it still looks good, except where I hit a tree, put a scratch in it  . I sprayed a complete jeep with implement about 7-8 years ago, flat black, out in the rain, lol. Last year one of the doors came back into my posession, held up pretty well considering it had absolutly no protective measures taken over the years, little prep was done prior to spraying, and I only did a couple light coats (just enough to cover the mismatched colors  ).

I will say, it was a pain in the *ss sanding all that crap off.

I did a 94 blazer W flat grey 3 coats and it held up for the 2 years I owned the truck. All the little spots that were starting to rust out abruptly stopped, and I went w/ the grey bc some stock early 90's blazers really came in that color so it actually didn't stand out. When I drove past other Chi town blazers that were factory grey it was only like a shade off!
