what could i do to the factory block and 5-6 grand? how how far would that get me then.

A Skip White 383 rotating assembly - $1000. Profiler, Dart head, Brodix - $1200. Add $800 for a quality port job or the same money for an AFR. Solid FT cam $300(short life) or hydro roller ($650). This in your budget and will be a stretch to make 500whp, most likely 450whp.

Now you're going to get my speech on HP ( :) ). As far as I'm concerned, the motor I described above is all I want in a street vehicle. After that, a NA small block doesn't have enough street manners to be considered 'street friendly'. Not knowing you and your experience, 300 whp is a true tire burner and even more with a stiff rear gear/tire combo. When you start hitting 500WHP, you'll be at the point of being able to do rolling burnouts. And it should/needs to be considered a race only application in NA form. Forced induction is a game changer - 300whp NA + forced induction is the best of both worlds.

We drive all of our cars. My son's car, '80 Cutlass, is over 400HP NA and it's street manners are ALMOST not streetable, repeat almost. Add 15psi and it's stupid quick if it hooks up.

I am curious why the specific goal of 500 RWHP and remember regardless of what you can build for $6,000 you still have to build the rest of the car to support the engine such as fuel system, exhaust, trans, rear end, safety equipment etc.

Lot of good advice given, and in the long run you should give some thought to a crate engine assembled or you assemble. I'll tell you what I am curently running if it helps you at all. The Regal has a stock block L-82 350 w/ iron 2.02 chevy (ported) [switched to edelbrock alu-rpm heads-no change] comps 306s solid flat tappet, Vic Jr w/ 750 through a T-400 and putting 450 HP to the wheels. The Sonoma has a 350 .030 over wiseco 12/1 pistons, 6 in rods, RHS 220 runner heads, crane solid roller cam, Super Vic w/750 through a glide putting 525 to the wheels. But, there is - No replacement for displacement

Sound like real nice and well thought out builds. Would you consider either street friendly, i.e. take on a 200 mile trip?

Build it as big as you can before getting into exotic cylinder heads. I think 220-230cc is about it. Even some 230's need offset rockers. If you want to go pump gas, that will be a limiting factor on compression.

I wish I could say the Regal was a thought out build but it was a bunch of parts thrown together to finish the points chase which turned out to be quite a combo that I haven't been able to improve on. There isn't any $$$ in the engine. The Regal is street legal and I would get in it now and do 200 without a problem. The Sonoma was built for the strip and not street legal. With exhaust and bigger fuel cell I wouldn't have a problem driving it on the street.

REAL 600HP is LOTS on the Street. The SBC in my Malibu I'm guessing (not dynoed) is around 575hp. And it ran 6.65 in the 1/8th this weekend, that's 10.30-40's in the 1/4. All steel but the hood. 3250lbs with the driver.
The motor isn't anything crazy but not really streetable either...383, 200cc cast iron Dart heads, 680 roller cam, 12.5:1 compression, Victor Jr Intake, Rupert 850cfm Alcohol Carb

You're probably pretty close on your guess. We did a 383 about 20 years ago that DID dyno at 575 hp and in a 68 Chevelle that weighed 3170 w/driver it went 10.40's.
