78 cutlass W-31 build

Glad to see some progress on this one Eric. Glad to see you catch a break on the engine.
Yeah me too I still can't understand that hole 180 out and running. And when you explain it absolutely no one believes you and tells you to check things that have been gone over 100 times. Turns out I'm not the only one who had that problem. I found a guy on classic olds with the same issue and was told a story of one from an old school mechanic (my uncle Bob) where he had the same problem. It's gotta be something in the pickup or module that cause the problem but I for the life of me can't understand. At least it's fixed now and I'm moving on with 175 psi per cylinder and a much better attitude.

That motor should perform pretty nice with that much compression. What cam is in this Olds 350?

That's the cam card and if you go back in the thread you'll see all the port work and other stuff that I did.

I've decided I'm going to be lazy today and do almost nothing lol. That said I'm hanging around the house with Lauren and the wife for a change. I did however go online and order a few things like an EGR gasket for an A-4 intake, a rear gear installation kit, a set of Richmond 3:23 gears, bad a new pilot bushing for my 87 cutlass. Because whenever I order parts for one I'm usually thinking about the other. Mostly because this car was built almost entirely from my spare and leftover parts. You may be wondering why I went 3:23 because I have the leftover summit brute strength carrier purchased in the '80s that had noisy 4:11s on it that was in the 87 and I want this car to GO but still do highway. I think my choice will perform well overall and using what I got makes it cheaper to put together. Maybe tomorrow I'll go bleed the brakes and change the oil... Or not because I'm supposed to get snow tonight.

I ran that cam with 9.6 to 1 on 91 with the same 175 psi. It liked to ping but my quench sucked. You may have to limit vacuum advance. Running NGK 5670-8 plugs, slow down the advance curve and limit vacuum advance to 10 degrees eliminated the pinging.

There's going to be a lot of tuning the distributor in it was for my big block so it's curved completely wrong and has very light springs. At this point I'm just happy it runs as well as it dose

Today was a good day. I left the house this morning with a shopping list, remembered to buy everything, and accomplished what I set out to and more.
First stop auto parts store. Picked up some dinosaur vitamins and minerals from Lucas for the oil, a oil filter, 4' of fuel line, 4 hose clamps, and a cheap clear fuel filter (not the ones that unscrew and burn down the car)
Then I hit the big blue home improvement store for some stainless steel bolts and washers. After that it was the GMC dealership about a letter that I got in the mail regarding the airbags in my pickup and finally Sunoco for 5 gallons of 93.
Before I even bought it in I did the fancy new EGR that globex made me. I took a picture of the EGR evolution of this motor for you guys

So that's the valve off the 260 then the block off from the 350 remember the motor was orange and purple when I got it. Then my new gasket. My CNC made block off and my stainless bolts and washers. I took a picture of the back of the new plate to

They really did a nice job it's way better than I expected especially since they did it for free. I guess it pays to be nice to your neighbors.
To continue on I adjusted the idle a little it was to low and kept stalling. It's probably because it still doesn't run smoothly as it should but no tuning today I was on a mission to cross things off the list. I changed the oil because it's about damn time! After all these years it still had the brake in oil in it. That went well no metal on the magnet and no chunks. I didn't cut open the filter yet but I will. Next project was It always smelled like gas around this car when it had recently ran. Well why wouldn't the fuel line instead in 1977 be good lol it literally ripped off in my hands. So I replaced the line from the frame to the pump and installed the cheap plastic filter.

I gave the wife a call and had her bring my little helper and some lunch down. I really wanted there input on the car and the direction I should be taking. Janet knows what my plan is for the car but Lauren thinks we're just doing it to have something until my 87 or her H/O is done. Little dose she know what I'm actually planning. Funny thing is as I questioned her about what to do to the car she basically described what I was already planning. So with my little helper there we bled the brakes again. This time correctly I got all 4 bleeders open. The rt front was tough. I had to hammer the wrong size socket on it and use a torch but we got it done. I took a picture of the EGR block off installed for you also.

Janet got a few pictures of Lauren and I taking it out for a lap around the building.

Unfortunately I couldn't work on it today so I went to the shop this afternoon to pull it out and it's running like crap again. I think I should order a new set of plugs for it tonight. Any suggestions on what I should be running in it with plug numbers would be great. I think I'd like to stick with an AC plug but what number? It's got #6 heads and an hei and nothing came stock with that configuration.

I personally like the NGK XR5. I notice a slightly better idle than the AC Delco. The AC Delco R45S is probably about right, one colder than the mid to late 70's R46SZ plugs. The AC R43S is a bit colder, if you experience pinging. Check the plug wires and cap and rotor as well. Where is the timing currently at?

I think the issue I'm having now is voltage maybe it's not charging. The battery is up enough to start it but when I ran it today it had been off the charger and I didn't use the jump box. I know a stock hei likes a full 12v or they can get weird. I'm sure this MSD hei probably has no tolerance for low voltage. I'm going to pick up an alternator tomorrow after work. Today after I left the shop I went out to my building to grab the posi unit from my 87 and found I had a leftover blow proof cover for a 7.5 that was also on the 87 so I'm going to put that on this one too. I thought I had a set of Moser axles somewhere but I can't find them so it's not getting them. At least not now anyway
