78 cutlass W-31 build

I keep second guessing myself on everything I do lately. It's like I'm going all Howard Hughes or something. Keep wondering if I bought the wrong gears for the carrier I have. Took some pictures of the numbers on the old ring gear tonight so I could blow them up but I still can't make out the hole number and Google isn't being my friend.

I'm thinking I may as well get new pinion and carrier bearings because I'm there anyway. Didn't make it to the parts store tonight either I was tired and went straight home. There's always tomorrow and I probably won't touch it until the weekend anyway.

What carrier do you have or what gears were on it? Do you have the part number for the gears going on?

I wonder if thick gears were used on the 3.08 and down carrier? Hopefully not.

And that's why I'm second guessing myself. The history of that rear was a long one though. Back in the early 90s my brother purchased a extremely clean silver 88 Monte Carlo SS from it's original owner the only modification done to it was (and the seller said this) he put Richmond 4:11 gears in it and a summit racing equipment brute strength carrier. My brother is a purest so I swapped out the rear for him with one from an 87 SS we had at the lot and I put a rear from one of my parts cars in it (a 79 6cyl cutlass 2:56 open) because that 87 was heading to bordentown nada auction and didn't matter. So my brothers car got a stock Monte SS posi with I think 3:42? Posi and I got the 4:11 it was in my 83 then it was in storage for like ever then I put it in my 87 cutlass. When I did the Chrysler 8.75 in the 87 Andy at a and d rears wanted it the 4:11s were always noisy like they were set to deep so I just pulled the carrier out and gave Andy the axels and housing with the pinion still in it. That's what I remember about the rear. Come to think of it maybe I gave Andy the Moser axles lol oh well this car doesn't need them anyway.

What style posi was the Summit Brute Strength?

I think that is a Series 3 carrier from the pics, but it's hard to be sure without a measurement. The 4.11 appear thicker to me than 3.42's or 3.73's.

Moot now though if you have the spacer in hand.
