the carrier split is 2.56 and 2.73 fits a series 2 carrier, and 3.08 and up fits a 3 series carrier.

chevy 8.2 rear ends didn't offer a lot in freeway gears. i can only find info stating 2.56 and 2.73 ratios were available for the 8.2 axle.
most of these have been tossed in favor of more performance oriented ratios. chevy offered the 8.2 in the impala thru 1970, in the chenille thru 1971or 1972, and the nova thru 1972 possibly 1974.

Late '72 A bodies had 8.5 rear. My '72 Monte had one (June production.)

what I was trying to do is to give me more room to play with 4th on the highway. The 5th I have in the transmission is .73 and that gear is relatively easy to change, it comes in .68 and .78 in addition to the .73. Right now with the gears I have at 75 mph I'm at 1,900 rpm so if I got the 2.92 rear I'd change the 5th to .68 and have longer 1 to 4 gears for the city and highway.

another option is to get a 8.5" rear, 2.93 gears are available from lt1 equipped caprice and roadmaster wagons.

thanks but I'm not interested in changing the rear, I like the width of the 8.2 I have. It took me almost a year to find this rear end.
i figured as much. i haven't found any 2.93s listed for the 8.2, will 2.73s work for you?
joe

i can only find them used. i haven't found them new anywhere. i have a set for my 66 wagon that i removed from a '71 chevelle axle.
maybe you could put a slightly taller tire on the rear to get you there instead of changing gears.
