yes there was a B&W rear in the 87-90 irocs but it was a 7.75" ring gear. wow what an improvement .125"!!!!!
and to top that off you CANNOT find parts for them, unless you have a few as spares, AND theres only THREE ring gears for them 3.27, 3.45, and 3.70.
not too much of a selection is it?
p.s. the 3.70 from GM is $1150.50 canadian (it was last time i checked)

Actually the Borg Warner rears ran from 85 through 90 bird and maro's. They where also offered with 2.77's and 3.08's and can even be found with drums and no posi. Parts can be found for them but carriers and cones are impossible to get. The are much stronger than a ten bolt and most importantly lack c-clips so if you should frag a diff you don't send your axles out of the housings. Randys ring and pinion sells gears for them.

I personally kinda like the idea of a torque arm and maybe a watts link instead of a panhard. It would make pinion adjustment a snap and should work better in the twisties to boot.

Didn't mopars run lockers in the 60-70's? They are streetable but most people don't like the clicking/clunking sound when cornering.
