Hopefully you get lucky but its never a good idea to use a converter frome a smoked trans in a fresh one. Especially when a reman D5 can be had for about $150 including the core charge from rock auto.

I did not know that about the reman D5 at rockauto. I will definitely be looking into it for the future. thanks!

Today I took another look at the car and trans.

Ends up the passenger side jackstand was a little higher than the drivers side, such that only one side of the trans bellhousing would slide up onto the dowel.

Once I levelled out the car, the trans went in smooth as butter.

Ive got the bellhousing bolts in, converter bolts in, trans mount and crossmember installed.

This week I will be doing all the hookups. Hope to be driving next weekend.

So on the throttle cable at the carburetor end it looks like I am missing a grommet.

I have a steel loop there about .480" diameter.

The carb stud is .250".

Anyone have a pic of the right grommet or piece? How about a part #?

I've rigged it to work for now but I want a permanent fix.

Thanks for any help!

Unfortunately, they only sold the entire cable as a replacement. I know, that sucks. And they're made of unobtanium. They listed a bushing and sleeve in the parts books, but they said they were for 350N (diesel). Nothing for 307. Oddly, it's p/n 403410 and sleeve is 414091.

The GM p/n for the cable for the 84 H/O (and other 307 G-body cars) is 25504322. Aftermarket is ATP Y214, Pioneer CA8497, and Anchor 61424. Have no idea of quality fitment of the aftermarket cables.

I know there is grommets and inserts you can buy for the early 70s style throttle cables separate. GM part numbers 403410 for the bushing, and 414091 (sleeve) But I don't know if they'll fit on the end of an 80s style for sure cuz I never attempted it.

Here's a fleabay ad for the end kit for an early 70s style setup.

I know it's not much help, but this is all I got.

Weekend update: Ive got the car back on the road.

The engine bay cleaned up nicely with the AC and Cruise control pieces removed.
The -AN braided trans cooler lines were an easy install and avoid the headers nicely.
17084554 Qjet is running great after restoration. Too bad it will reside under the air cleaner where no one will see it.
One of the best results of the cleanup/overhaul of the engine and trans is NO MORE FLUID LEAKS!!!

Unfortunately I now have no 4th gear. I am not sure why just yet. I will run a pressure test on the 4th clutch as a first measure. I had air tested the 4th clutch on assembly, and it had worked, so I suspect either the valvebody or the re-used 4th clutches and steels are the cluprit. It looks like I am driving a three speed for the summer! That's OK because I really enjoy rowing the Lightning rods. Hopefully I wont have to remove the trans for the fix, but if I do, it will be a winter job. The good news is, the trans overhaul and shift kit fixed all of the low speed problems and slow shifts it had exhibited.

Next steps are finishing the Ttop rust/rot remediation, bodywork/paint, and new weatherstripping and trim reinstallation.
