Changing the oil I see that the passenger header collector will interfere with dropping the oil filter.

I am going to see if the local store has a shorter version of the filter.

If they do, I will mash the current one however I need to remove it, then install the shorter one.

I really don't want to have to remove the header.

What filter is on it? There is the super long 51049 Wix, the shorter but just as big around 51258 Wix and then there is the Olds 307 version which is both shorter and only as big around as the filter adapter itself, the 51045. The Mobil 1 version is even slightly shorter, M1-206, supposed to be 4.19" tall. I have used that filter, you won't get a shorter small diameter, high quality Olds V8 filter.

I will grab a pic of the filter. It's only as big around as the mounting flange.

I'm under there today dropping the trans fluid and changing filter. It looks like pepto bismol. I checked for a leak at the trans cooler with a pressure tester and there is none. Maybe condensation? The fluid was definitely low so maybe some aeration?

Who's got a suggestion on how to clean the old fluid out? Let it drip a few days or? Maybe just change it twice?

Anyhow I'll move forward and see what gives....

attaching pics of oil filter and transmission pan.

As I poured the Pepto out of the trans pan, I could see blobs and drops of water. The car had sat for a decade or so, and there was a layer of sludge in the pan about 1/8" deep.

Once the liquid stuff was poured out, there still remained a significant layer of black friction and metal bits. Nothing indicates catastrophic failure, but certainly some mileage has gone thru this trans.

I do have a new radiator for this car - I may throw it in as a "why not", or as a pre-emptive strike against radiator failure.

I would swap rads, that is very pink. That is enough sludge in the bottom but the pink equals moisture. How did it shift? I would suggest hooking a hose to top cooler line after the filter with pan clean out. Putting the hose in a big drain pan or aa pail, idle in neutral, adding fluid till it comes out red.

Thanks that's a good idea for how to flush it out some. I'm going to add a drainplug to the pan too, to facilitate fluid changes.

The trans shifted well, if a little slowly. I attributed that to the low fluid level. I didn't drive it much be a use it was unknown.

The pepto bismol was thicker than Dec merc as well. Maybe some marvel mystery oil or something was added. Who knows.

How do the clutches look that you can see straight above the pan, any delamination? Does the rad look original? It is the original OZ code trans? Those trans will have firmer shifts and higher shift points, even at part throttle. Water/antifreeze is what pink ATF says to me, maybe give it a taste. I think the M1-206 oil filter will fit the best with your full length headers.

It is the OZ trans yes. Its got the hi po valvebody with the purplepaint.

I agree with you, it has to be coolant that got in there to make the pepto bismol. Too much there to be condensation.

It was the original radiator, looks to me, a 3 core unit. I used a coolant system pressure tester to load the system up to 17lbs and didn't see any leakage, but somehow moisture was getting into the trans and the cooler lines are the way. In fact when I think about it, the coolant level required topping off a couple times so its likely there was leakage.

I did put in the parts store radiator I had. Plastic tank aluminum core junk but it doesn't leak. Maybe Ill have the original radiator serviced. It looks in great shape, not banged up.

I welded a drain plug onto the trans pan right in the middle of the pan magnet. New filter, 8qts of DexMerc and I was back in business.

It runs and drives, just went around the block. Manual shifts via the lightning sticks are crisp. The trans does feel more responsive.
In auto, it shifts kinda quickly at low throttle, and likes to stay in gear longer than I like before a downshift.

I haven't gone too hard on it yet for fear of something catastrophic.

I am going to run it with the new fluid for a bit, then drop it and refill fresh again if all is well. Just to flush it out a bit more.

Hoping for a serviceable transmission........

I think you should be fine by the sounds of it. Yeah, I would get the original rad done by a good shop. Good call on the drain plug, I was going to suggest it.
