You can economically make decent power with a 305 and fairly recently their was a good magazine buildup showing what they did the costs and the results. That said if it were mine and I was going to do something for the Monte to be used as a full weight fast & dependable driver and wanted to stay sbc I would do either a 383 or 406. You can more easily and more reliably make the power keep the rpms down and not have it cost at least not dramatically more than re-doing that 305 or locating and doing a 350.
i agree 100%. plus, since your 305 almost certainly has worn cylinders and rings and therefore would need a full rebuild, you might as well upgrade to a 350 or larger. 350 blocks are a dime a dozen and it only costs slightly more to make it into a 383. plus the 305 is pretty much limited to 300 maybe 350HP without MAJOR work. a basic 350 will easily match that, and a 383 or 400 will easily make 400HP+.
