My name is Nathan im 37 ,and live in South Carolina.This is my 86 454 ss monte ,it has a ford 9in.edelbrock heads,edelbrock intake,th400 trans,b&m shift kit,Flowmaster exhaust,car is super clean and pretty damn fast,one thing I would like to swap out is the 950 cfm q jet carb and maybe swap over to headers,anyone have any recommendations on carb type that will fit on a edelbrock performer 2-0 intake,and headers that will fit ,the steering box has already been changed out to make more room?

Welcome to the forum from KY. That's a super nice SS, looks like it's been well preserved and taken care of. I exited the world of carbs years back to go EFI on my sbc cutlass....but I'm sure 565bbchevy will tune in at some point and maybe give a recommendation on a carb and headers.

There are several guys here running big blocks, and tons of knowledge floating around.

Btw....engine pics??? Let's see that 454!

Welcome to the site from Houston. Great looking car. I'll bet it's a blast to drive. I'll be looking forward to seeing the engine bay pics as well. I'm sure the big block guys will chime in soon with advice on headers and on the carb.

Can't go wrong with a big block.

There are a couple of headers that will fit. Depends on how much you want to do to get them in. Probably would recommend an aftermarket transmission crossmember that will clear the exhaust if it doesn't already have one.

To use for performance, it is hard to be a Holley style double pumper or manual secondary carb. For drive-ability the Q-jet is tough to beat.

Very nice Monte !!!
I gues you could say that I'm partial to a big block in a G Body;

Here is a blog I made a few years ago on putting a set of A Body headers in my Monte;
http://guysmontess.blogspot.ca/2011/10/body-headers-to-fit-bbc-g-body.html
IMO,unless you are building your BBC for all out power,I would suggest you use a smaller tube 1 7/8 inch primary tube header.
I believe they will fit better.
There is a swap header available from Hooker,but it is expensive.

Hey thanks for the response I'll look into your blog thanks for the info I appreciate it alot trying to pull some casting numbers on my motor it's apparently a crate motor with around 6k on it,would like to know a rough hp rating with the edelbrock heads and intake,and 950 cfm carb,wanting to put it on a dyno but it has a ton of power and pulls hard I'm guessing around 400 hp?

If it's a GM crate motor,AFAIK,the LS-6 and HO 454 crate's were rated at 425 HP.
Eddy heads probably wouldnt a whole lot of difference,but if it's had a cam swap that could add a bit.
If that carb flows 950 CFM it may be too big.
Sounds like fun though !!!

Not 100% positive on the casting number yet but I'm fairly confident that the motor is pretty new,everything else is new trans rearend etc.,the 950 carb is a q jet so it bogs for a second when you punch it but then it takes off like a rocket,may have to switch to a 850 holly or edelbrock carb to get rid of the bog issue not to sure what carb to go with on the performer 2-0 intake?
