Cut the oil filter apart, if it has metal in it, take it apart. If not, make sure the flex plate is not broken.

You buy the 496 kit to match whatever bore you have or need? Depends on space and time, one might consider grabbing another core block, taking it to the machine shop and leave your car intact until the machine work is finished. Your heads and intake will be perfect.

With aluminum heads, you can easily go up to 10-1 compression and be safe with pump gas. Be realistic in what you want for the car. A mild 496 will make 575+ horsepower easily with your heads and 10-1 compression. Probably 475-500 with 8.5 or 9.0 compression. It really will depend on your budget. You could also consider repairing what you have and adding a larger cam or even upgrade to a hydraulic roller cam.
Please help I don't want to completely rip apart my motor if I don't have to ,would like to keep it a 454,just do the bearings and cam carb ,have a holly ultra 850 double pumper in mind but I'm not sure on the bearing clearings, or what size to order at this point do I go with the standard size?

Something to consider is that once you start putting more than say 400 HP in a G Body, the frame needs to be strengthened. Has your frame been boxed? If not, stick with the 454. That's plenty for the street. Take Bar50's advice and cut open the oil filter and inspect.

Yes I will cut open the filter, thank you,the engine only starts knocking at about 1500 rpm caught it as soon as it started think it may be a rod bearing ? But some people say it may be a converter bolt I think it's internal problem?

Frame is not boxed want to keep the 454

You can identify a rod knock by pulling plug wires one at a time. If pulling the plug wire make it quit knocking it's a rod bearing. Could be a flex plate failure or a loose converter bolt. What were the circumstances when it started knocking?

Pretty easy morning driving to work got on it a little but not much, then noticed the knocking at crusing speed but only under acceleration

How is hot oil pressure?

If there are metal flakes in the oil or it looks similar to metallic gold paint...it may need to come apart. You don't have to go to 496, some guy do. There are still plenty of 454 crankshafts out there.

850 seems to be the magic number for 454-496, at leaSt in cars I have been around used for drag racing.

Keep us informed
