Buddies 97 k1500 was idling rough, screw mounts for cap were broken so we replaced the distributor, followed the replacement procedure, and it runs like dog sh*t and is just dumping fuel.

Why? It'll run fine for about 30 seconds then go back to popping missing and backfiring and using a ton of fuel.

what kind of distributor?

check plugs, check plug wires, coil, harmonic balancer

New distributor, new plugs, wires are all transferring spark, balancer is irrelevant on vortecs.

Don't you have to "time" the engine electronically when you remove the distributor on those? What is the replacement distributor? The finest aftermarket Chineaseum?

I'm assuming it is all stock (except for replaced parts as mentioned) but not sure why you state the balancer is irrelevant on vortecs. it is a SBC, right? this can't happen, and cause the ring to shift?

I think so.

Buddy got it running, still has a slight miss. Changed the factory single position distributor hold down with a normal one. He twisted it until it worked.
