Alternator noise

I have replaced 2 alternators with the same issue. I noticed the whine too and it was worse if I was using accessories like the lights, radio, etc. In my case the battery was either new or checked out as ok like yours. Putting in the new alternator and no more whine. Did not have any further charging system issues.

It is good advice from pontiacgp in checking your wires. Other cars I have looked over had buildup on their battery connections and bad cables which caused charging issues.
Yeah I'll have to do that and see what happens maybe loose and dirty which I hope instead of buying a new one.

Run the car put a volt meter on the battery see if it is charging/maintaining the battery.

It should be 12.6 minimum.

Keep the volt meter on the battery until in makes the noise see what happens.

I had an alternator do that to me once.

Didn't know why, Didn't care why, I brought it to my rebuilder and swapped it for another.

Problem solved.

i don't want to be out cruising enjoying myself just to get stuck somewhere over a $35.00 part.

If its just at idle most likely a load whine, when your car is at idle it still has to Supply power to everything an idle is at its least power output. Was there a pulley exchange or did it get down sized ?
If its under throttle, belts or bearings.

I did in fact replace the pulley and do have an amp for stereo also...which I should've stated in the first place

Amps can cause big load on Alternators , what size alternator ? 62 amp ? Should be bigger. Sorry don't know your car , power options on it ? If so should be in the 80 amp range. You can increase output by smaller size pulley or get a bigger amp alternator.
My Camaro whines like a ..... if it idles to much an that's with 125 amp but l got a lot of electrical stuff to power.

I believe it's 63 amps which ever it first came on 86 Cutlass Supreme and only have the power windows (no interior lights) don't work...and just amp...

When I've experienced the screeching sound, it definitely turned out to be my alternator under a load. Does it seem to happen more when you have your headlights on, wiper, heater blower, etc.?
I think over time, alternators lose their output. I'd upgrade it if it's a standard 63 amp unit. You'll be much happier in the long run. In my opinion, the 63 amp unit is under powered for our cars.

Gonna have to test again to see if under powered and determine either to get another one mentioned earlier its a lil wobbly and that might have a part in it.

If it is intermittent I would not think electrical(like a bad stator) I tend to go to worn pulley/glazed V belt. If there is a rear mounting bolt(most have), make sure it is there. When making noise spray some silicone on belt. No belt dressing! If the noise goes away temporarily, we know the area to look to . When whining disconnect 2 wire connector. That will further isolate.

Yes happens from time to time, and would water in spray bottle work instead of silicone for belt and 2 wire connector behind alternator with 1 and 2
