Alternator wiring

In my 1985 cutlass my alternator won't charge. my battery light doesn't work in my dash an I'm sure that's the problem but the bulb has been changed but still doesn't work. Is it ok to bypass the battery light and just wire the alternator to get charge signal from switched 12 volts?

I think it's better to fix the problem than to work around it
