Am I crazy for wanting to buy this 83 Monte Carlo SS??

Buy it cheap, part it out and put that money towards something that needs a lot less work.

I'm not sure what the motor is worth, but besides that and the shell there's nothing I could sell.

I guess I'll pass on this one, thanks guys

For some reason I can't see the photos, but from the image in my head of what's been described I'd say you made an excellent decision. Your description of how the motor ran and describing it as cam'd sounds more like a BBC with a flat cam lobe which equates into a complete teardown. How you described the wiring equates into the term 'butcher' to me.

Something to consider, these cars are not valuable or expensive to find. Finding them in good condition for less than $1500 is not difficult. By good condition I mean frame rails in useable condition, complete interior and bodies. 300whp (meaning 360-400 crank hp) is going to be tough on your budget IMO. But finding a G-body that is in running condition, on your budget, that you can drive and upgrade as money allows is more than possible.

Building a Vortec head 350-375 hp motor from a core engine - $3K. If you manage to find a running 350 with a good bottom end for $500 and swap a set of Vortec heads onto , then you can save $1K.

A rebuilt TH350 with an off the shelf converter - $1K.

But be advised, as the HP wants and wishes increase much over 375-400hp you can expect the budget to grow linearly at a minimum.

Where are you located? And good luck!

wise decision to pass on it.... if you're willing to travel a little ways out, there's better deals to be had on better examples

and don't forget to search out cuttys, regal, and grand prixs

Sometimes only one specific style fills the void for wanting a Gbody.

Glad you are going to pass on that one. Down here in Houston, that's a parts car at best. For your age and budget that car needs too much. Find yourself a car you can drive. Having one to drive that you can make improvements to is much more fun than having a basket case you may never get on the road. Find a car you can drive and build up a drivetrain on the side for it and then put it in when you are ready. I know it's hard to get excited about a 305 or a 307 but if they are well tuned and you give them just a little help like exhaust and rear gear, they run pretty good.

Exactly! I like all G Bodies. I wouldn't care to have a Cutlass, Grand Prix, El Camino or a Regal but my favorite out of all them is the non-SS Monte Carlos. They've always been my favorite and I had to have one.

As a Cutlass guy I have to say-you're weird....😉
