Amazon

I only go to the Auto parts store if I either want it, or didn't plan ahead properly, and need it now. When I have to go to three different stores (not all the same company) to get 8 AC Delco spark plugs for a 5.3, something is terribly wrong. Now I just try to stay a week or more ahead and order all of it online except for oil and chemicals. I may have to try ordering the oil. The brick and mortar have done this to themselves. They are convinced invetory is a bad thing. Put bad service and ridiculously high prices on top of that and I don't understand why anyone is in the auto parts store anymore.

Absolutely true, they are very much doing it to themselves. But one big problem is going to be once Amazon kills all the locals then they have the ability to do the same thing with price, it will just be another step in "Prime" I am sure

Well I waited a week for all the replies before commenting here. A few of you know I work for Amazon, but even more of you have forgotten, as I do refer to them a lot in my build thread. I have worked for them for over (3) years. They are a huge entity, and only growing. We open new Fulfillment Centers ( FC's ) on the regular. Newest one I believe is in Birmingham, Alabama. The company has huge growth potential for employees, great benefits, stock options, 95% tuition reimbursement, employee perks/discounts. They buy food often, and offer cash rewards to top performers in various roles. They make huge donations, and promote many local, national, and international events. I earn time off (3) different ways. I work (4) days a week, which gives me plenty of time to work on cars. It's a great work/life balance.

Now to the responses here in this thread. I agree with everything said here. There are a lot of happy customers here... price, availability, quick shipping, easy return/reimbursement process, and yes... 7 day delivery. The Amazon delivery vans you see in your neighborhood are not owned by Amazon. They are 3rd party contractors. Which is why one post said they just slow down and heave the package toward you door. Amazon would never allow that from their own drivers. I have also worked at one of the Delivery Centers ( DC's ) here in Houston. Lazy delivery drivers, theft... they get dealt with, trust me. Sidenote... Amazon will even help you open up your own company to deliver their products. With guaranteed volume, to ensure you make money. I will be the first to agree that Amazon may not have the lowest price on EVERYTHING. But as stated in another post, you have to know your prices. Most of you know how much of a "deal hunter" I am. Even I compare the part#'s to Jeg's, Summit, and local retailers. Even with my employee discount, sometimes I find it cheaper at Rock Auto. A couple of you have experienced a problem with your package ( damage, shortage, etc. ) Amazon takes care of it, and a lot of times (depending on the item), doesn't even mess with the expense of asking you to send it back. If they want the item back, you can just drop it off at an Amazon "Partner", such as Post Office, Kohl's, or other retailer. Inventory is amazing at Amazon FC's. We have literally everything. I see it on a daily basis, as I am an Auditor for the ICQA Dept. Sometimes in our parking lot, we have aver a million items inside trucks just waiting to be unloaded. On any given day, I handle anything from paper towels, cosmetics, groceries, car parts, hardware, clothing, small appliances ( larger appliances are handled at another facility ), artwork, sunglasses, jewelry, vitamins, school supplies, the list goes on and on. Even I wonder what Amazon's next move will be. I'm hoping for a new FC to open in New Mexico, so I can relocate to Albuquerque, and retire in 10 years. As of now New Mexico residents have to have their Amazon orders trucked in from either Dallas or Phoenix. Think about the logistics here... that's why some orders take longer than others.

DISCLAIMER - Amazon has in no way compensated me for my testimony, nor is this meant to be a solicitation for Amazon Prime ( me and the wife have just watched (3) movies in the last (2) days - add up the rental fees and fuel cost to go get/return them- now add in that free shipping on everything you guys buy, and you start to understand the yearly cost of Prime Membership starts to pay off pretty quickly ). This is just my personal opinion of my employer, who has never missed a payday 😊✌.

Most everyone I know is very happy with Amazon, as you saw with my gripe is definitely not a regular problem to have or solve and I do get that. My problem is I was into Amazon before most everyone knew of them, I was one of the early adopters of both them and eBay but was tossed aside after wasting a lot of my time. Whereas everyone else as you said gets to keep their product which is what they did with the car cover and then also get refunded for it. There is definitely a lot of good to come from Amazon but really hated the slowing of non Prime down so that everyone will want to get one.

While i can agree that Amazon can help with odd items that you are not able to find locally i disagree with purchasing from them to save a few bucks when you could support a local company. I personally would rather pay a premium to know that i am supporting locall business's and their staff so they can have jobs and give back to the local economy.

I could not tell you how many times i have been told " i can go online and purchase that part for 10-20 dollars cheaper" even after i have spent half hour helping them figure out what they need as they have no idea and or helping diagnose their issues. What people don't understand is that you are paying for added values, when you need me to come in at night or sundays to help with your broken down equipment or that door prize donation for your daughters stag and doe we do it. If that " defective " part is 6 months past the warranty period guess what i will help you.

Everyone complains that all the ma and pa shops are gone and all the knowledgeable people are gone as well, but as long as we all are focused on saving a couple bucks then it will continue to happen.

Thats my rant.

Completely agree, my grandma has harped on this for 20 years and always supports local. I haven't talked with her directly about Amazon but she will never use a Walmart for their business practices, what she has done for 20 years is what all the hipsters want to do these days. That is partially why I made the comment about running all the other businesses out and then jacking up their prices which is absolutely what they intend to do long term. And just like the yellow cab/uber debate some of it needed to happen to make what was status quo change and be more efficient.

Working in Logistics for over 20 years it's really hard not to like their business model. Been in 3 of their fulfillment warehouses here in YYZ. Automated pickers, then the "materials handler" puts the box thru the taping machine and puts the shipping label on it. Then on to the shipping sort ( local courier, vs canpost, vs FedEx ). I would lose my mind in there but in talking to the employee's they say it an OK place to work.

Now if I could only find out where my fishtank filters are that I ordered on Saturday. Courier tried to deliver on Monday ( holiday here, so nobody at work ), then again at 1715 hrs today ( I left work at 1655 hrs ). Filters are too big to jam in the mailbox. Wish they would just call me and I would tell the driver to leave them in the work truck 🙂
