and to touch on the ASE .... those tests have gone downhill as well. Just about anybody with a little automobile knowledge can pass them

I doubt the average counter help guy could pass the ase test....if he could, he would, cause it would get him another $1.00/hr increase on his salary if he had ASE cert. My store manager at AZ didnt pass it....and neither did most of the others I worked with.

I dunno haha, I know a couple guys who are ASE certified at a couple parts stores and I wouldn't trust them to change my oil. They may know part function but lack the concept of how things work.

I know a few ase certified mechanics who shouldn't even think about touching a car, lol. As the techs I work with say, it looks good in the customers eyes having that badge, but in reality, all it proves, is that you know how to pass a test.

Must be nice, I never got a raise for getting certified.

I wish we got a raise for it :? Our owner is about the cheapest man I have ever met. He would let a 10 year employee go to hire a new untrained newbie into the parts industry :| I make $26,000 a year as a store manager at a $1,000,000/year store

I wish Walmart sold more AutoParts because then I could just get then myself and leave.
AutoZone, Advance around here is just a joke. Not one brain behind the counter and a store full of sticky things and chromy looking parts. If I have to go to one of these stores because my other 2 with knowledge behind the counter doesn't have it in stock and I go with the part number in hand. I look it up online, hand it to the moron behind the counter and say, I WANT THIS and don't ask me any question about what it goes to.
I pity the day the local drag guys retire from my NAPA and Car Quest store!!!
But I can say I have never been asked to purchase anything other than what I asked for. That might be because I put in my Pit Bull face and attitude before I go in!!!

I have a hard time believing that "any parts guy" can pass any ASE test. I've worked with those who were there to get a paycheck. The PM at the dealer where I spent a good share of my life didn't know how to use the parts catalog, because he quit helping techs after he hired me. It was basic training and nothing more than that. As it was stated in a previous post, most of these parts store employees are just someone looking for a job with no automotive knowledge or experience. For one of those people to take a Master Certification course and pass is ridiculous. Now if that person was a former tech, and had some experience under there belt, that's a different story.

Yes, they're are plenty of ASE Certified tech's that should be allowed near a car, too.

He must be cheap...cause even AZ or Advance pay their store managers a lot more than that. I hope you are making a good bonus at least. I made 30k as a parts pro w/bonus added in....Store Managers shouldnt make less than anybody else in the store....JMO

No, no they don't. Not everywhere. It really makes a big difference in where you work and how much of a b*tch the DM is.

You do realise there are parts specific ASE tests right? The problem is certification doesn't really mean anything for a tech or parts guy.

Why would anyone with an ASE cert who could get a job as a so called "tech" get a job at a parts store? 8.75 an hour isn't exactly tempting. The one guy who owns a shop we deal with daily just bought a house that I know cost him at LEAST 1.5 million dollars and a brand new awd Chrysler 300. No one would give up that kind of money to sell parts.

I'm personally not happy at all with the money I make... I want to make a minimum 50 grand a year. Which isn't too unreasonable in my opinion considering there are people in this country that make that per day.
