My backup lights don't come on when I shift into reverse..Now, I just had a new transmission put in 2 weeks ago, and the guys at the shop said they didn't touch the backup lights wiring.

I've changed the bulbs and checked for a blown fuse..Also, I've searched this forum, and no one has said specifically where the wire connector or switch is located. This is a 1986 Monte Carlo SS with floor shifter, 200R4 trans.

top of steering column. check to see if they put the linkage on trans that goes along side firewall to column. If they did, then the gear indicator switch is where you need to look.(white thing above column underneath dash)

Honestly, what you should be doing is going back to the shop and tell them ****ers that it was working before you took it to them. If they are licensed mechanics then they should not be neglecting to put your car back together properly. They are required to fix it. Speak to the manager and rip some strips off.

did you go from colum shifter to floor shifter? if not, then do what the guy above me said.

It has always been a floor shifted car..And yeah, my first reaction is usually to freak out, but that tends to make the situation worse. The shop manager said they would "look at it tomorrow" after he said that they didn't mess with the linkage, hinting that I would have to pay them for the job.

If it was replaced with the exact same unit and nothing was changed, then they need to rectify the situation. Shops holding themselves accountable has gone to the toilet over the years. If they're a shop worth returning to, they'll fix it, not just try to get you in & out as fast as possible to save them money.

Yeah..I agree..I've literally been ****ed over by just about every shop I've gone to recently..Even Walmart Express Tire and Lube! It makes Me sick, because that's the job I want, and I would appreciate a little respect towards my ride.

You know it's funny. From the highly acclaimed performance transmission specialist who I hired years ago to work on my 81 Grand Prix only to come in and find some young punk doing donuts with my car in their parking lot, and those same ****ers left the power wire to hang on the manifold causing a fire in the engine bay............. to another highly acclaimed performance suspension shop who I hired to work on my car only to see the shitheads throw my brand new center caps in a ****ing tool box with screws and sh*t then jack the car up with the trunk open till the trunk lid went "CLANG" on their ****ing bay door.... there is no safe shop in this world.

I have resorted to (and this works, mind you) saying "**** it" to the insurance regulation poster and walk right into the shop floor and do the damn work myself, or at the very least, look over the shoulder of the ******** working on my car, regardless of how much it pisses the guy off, to make sure he doesn't chip the paint or do something else stupid.

Ok done my rant and sorry for the thread being hijacked :|

Hope your shop buddies fix your issue for free. Let me know what happens. I'm ready to pick up the phone and give them sh*t if they don't!!!

There is a two prong plug with green wires that connects to the two prongs at the top of the white component in the picture in one of the posts. Remove that connector and jump the two terminals in the plug with the ignition on. Your backup lites should be on. If they are not then the problem is somewhere in the wires or lites..if they are then either the white component is defective or the rod from the steering column to the transmission is out of adjustment. If they did not put the rod back in place your wouldn't be able to remove your ignition key or start the car unless the column was in the proper position.

Thanks for the tip, Man. I assume by "jump" You mean cross them over with something metal like a screwdriver? I was able to locate the white thing (luckily without having to disassemble my steering column.)

I'm thinking of saying "**** it" and set up my back-up lights with a toggle switch..That would just be cool, anyways.
