The collar does turn when I shift gears..I wouldn't say it spins freely with the ignition on, but I can turn it with my hand and shift gears that way.

If you can shift gears that way then it hasnt been hooked back up and there is your problem. lol. The floor shifter and column should be conected and one shouldnt move or shift without the other

If it wasn't hooked up then he wouldn't be able to shift gears by turning the column....and he did say the column turned when he shifted gears....

HOLY ****!!!!
man im sorry if you had a bad experiance with the shops
some ppl just have the balls to work like that
ive been a tech for 15 years and my return rate is like 2% and those where for the occasional tool left on the floor or the seat ^^
if the shop owner has any clue he needs to tell his
POS shop manager to rectify the problem for FREE!!!!!!
or risk having a bad name put on his shop
if i had the cash and a place id start up my own shop where "THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT"!!!!!!!!
really strips my gears to hear that *ssh*les still rule

if anybody is in the tampa STpeters area ill tell you a Fanstasic shop to go to

TITAN auto owned and operated by my sons godfather and good friend Rob glasmyer
on 66th and park blvd

Or the floor shifter and the column arent hooked together. My cutlass is like that, u can shift it by turning the column or the floor but you have to make sure u turn the column to make everything work. Somethin down below is broke on it. I can hop in and start it and turn the column and leave the floor alone and cruise right along. Just turning the key u shouldnt be able to just turn the column as the column and floor shifter are supposed to be linked together so one doesnt move without the other

84 don't worry about it...we have all done sumthin like that..

the back-up lites are so basic I don't know why it hasn't been fixed yet. There is one hot wire to the switch on the steering column and like I posted testing that connection by jumping the wires will tell you if the problem exists somewhere past that connection or before the connection. If there is no hot wire when the ignition is on then the problem exists between that point and the fuse box. If that problem can't be traced then a new wire to feed the hot side can be spliced into an appropriate wire or a new wire from the fuse box can be easily run. Also since the shop did put the rod back in place I don't think they caused the problem unless they went out of their way to cause a issue with the wiring or the switch.

I had a problem with my back up lights, turns out the problem was with the wiring harness in the trunk, the previous owner had cut into the wire to splice in a rear back up light and alarm system, Anyway over time the wire got brittle as Gm used aluminum wiring and the connections were loose. Reconnected the wires properly, problem solved.

You know it's funny. From the highly acclaimed performance transmission specialist who I hired years ago to work on my 81 Grand Prix only to come in and find some young punk doing donuts with my car in their parking lot, and those same ****ers left the power wire to hang on the manifold causing a fire in the engine bay............. to another highly acclaimed performance suspension shop who I hired to work on my car only to see the shitheads throw my brand new center caps in a ****ing tool box with screws and sh*t then jack the car up with the trunk open till the trunk lid went "CLANG" on their ****ing bay door.... there is no safe shop in this world.

I have resorted to (and this works, mind you) saying "**** it" to the insurance regulation poster and walk right into the shop floor and do the damn work myself, or at the very least, look over the shoulder of the ******** working on my car, regardless of how much it pisses the guy off, to make sure he doesn't chip the paint or do something else stupid.

Ok done my rant and sorry for the thread being hijacked :|

Hope your shop buddies fix your issue for free. Let me know what happens. I'm ready to pick up the phone and give them sh*t if they don't!!!

if you walk into my bay, my tools go down untill you are out of my bay( I don't mind you hanging outside my bay door and watching- hell i'll probably talk to you while im working on your ride) and if you try to work on your car while its in my bay, both you and your car are leaving NOW! 30 + years as a master tech has made me kinda a dick, but i feel if you dont trust me,you need to find someone that you do trust to work on your vehicle :blam:

i actually wanna get some really good fog lights and mount them to the bottom of my rear bumper for "backup lights", but have a momentary switch for it. so if someone gets too close, shine em!
I am replacing my backup light bulbs with these new super bright driving lights which I can get to fit in there, and they will also have a momentary push button switch as well JUST to flash tailgating *ssh*les -- man I f***ing hate them.

I have a vacuum switching valve hooked up to a momentary contact switch, one vac line to manifold, other to a quart of trans fluid. When tailgated, push button for 10 sec or so, count to three and punch it  watch tailgater vanash in a cloud of stinking, thick smoke---hell they think that you just exploded   and a friend of mine says my elco looks like a patriot missle taking off
