We leave for Sturgis in 11 days and this is the current state of my motorcycle.

I wanted to go out for a quick ride Saturday, but lost oil pressure in the driveway. Upon closer inspection it looks like some debris from worn cam chain tensioners got sucked into the oil pump (there was also quite a bit of scoring on the pump, so I believe it to be original with 94,000+ mi.).

So I bought the Screamin’ Eagle Hydrualic cam plate with updated oil pump. There was also a nick on one of the camshafts, so I ordered a mild set of Lunati cams to throw in. Pulled the oil pan off to clean any debris, and going to flush the oil cooler

Ah, hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but simply flushing the oil cooler lines won't be enough. The shrapnel from those eroded tensioners has probably made its way throughout the entire oil system. Only preventative measure that is known to work is an engine teardown and inspection. Sounds radical and costly but it will guarantee that your head passages and the rocker galleries are free of debris. A very long time friend of mine is the owner of the local Harley Dealership and for some time a while ago having rides come in for tensioner replacement was a regular occurrence. If you caught it before they started to shred and all was okay but as soon as they started to self destruct, it got nasty.

Had not heard that Sturgis was still going to happen. Must be nice. Have not been able to attend in 20 years. With the border closed to non essential travel, it sounds like the attendance numbers will be way down. If you can get your mill cleaned out completely and re-assembled in time to make the run, a few pictures for this forum would be nice.

Meh, you've got the rocker boxes off and the bottom open. I'd flush it and roll.
You know you were due for a cam upgrade anyway. :sneaky:

Thanks for the advice. Surprsingly there was almost no debris caught up in the oil pan, which gives me hope the filter caught most most of it. So far the only place I’ve actually found debris was in the cam chest itself. Sounds riskey,
but I don’t have the time or resources to split the cases at this point.

Good luck, been there done that. Two tear downs instead of one and a U- haul.

Well are you riding or trailering? That makes a big difference.:cool:

Riding the whole way. We’re cheating a tiny bit. My mom doesn’t want to ride, so she’s driving along with us. So I guess I can bring some more tools than usual.


Done yet?

Cams should be here today, then I can start making some forward progress!
