Best exhaust setup

Could I get it inspected with just headers though? Probably not right? I know about the crossmember thing, and I do have access to a welder. Was thinking to cut out and use 6" channel iron for the notching.

Could I do the cats a little ways off the collectors, then H pipe, and still have room to fit mufflers under there before exiting out the side, or is there ground clearance issues.

Sounds like I'm better off buying the kit.

Have any of you guys used the u-fit exhaust kits they have out there?

Put full tailpipes in it. It will work much better in the long run and not look too redneck. Plus, the side exit exhaust will probably put you on a first name basis with every anal-retentive cop within a 50 mile radius of your house. Then, they can start popping the hood and citing you for EVERY missing piece of 80's smog crap you will not have. I would also check with the local inspector to see what is and is not checked for in the way of smog crap.

idk, the ny/nj area doesnt really have emphisis on smog devices... at all. not sure about pa.

3XBrownCutty - cant you find a mechanic thatll look passed exhaust emissions? also, what year is your car? i know in ny that after 25 years a car just recieves safety inspection which means that we dont even look at the exhaust. dunno bout pa though.

i have a chevy 350 in my 83 cutlass. i have ceramic coated flowtech headers, and straight pipes all the way back to 2 borla mufflers, with chrome tips coming out behind the rear tires. no cats or any garbage like that, the car sounds legal, and amazing. of course you can smell everything the state doesnt want you to, but i havent gotten bothered for it.

One of the guys helping me build the engine inspects cars, and the guy who painted my car can inspect.

Cutlass 2182: Did you have that bent up by an exhaust shop, or did you buy it as a kit??

yeah, i got passed too. it helps to know people. i went to a shop called all american muffler, not sure if its a chain, but they did an awesome job, i provided the headers and mufflers, the routed all the piping and put the tips on for $250 cash. the piping is really good work, it goes all the way up by teh rear wheels and then drops back down.

I got hooker headers with the air injection pipe fittings welded on them. the rest of the exhaust system consists of Jegs 2.5in. exhaust system for $180.00 i think. It comes with everything needed to install it and the pipes are mandrel bent. I had a friend install it with the clamps then i took it to the shop to get it welded. They charged $50. I also bought Dynomax cats with the air tubes. But it passes the smog test and inspection. I also bought some chrome tips for the rear to make look nice. As for the sound its not too bad for "turbo"mufflers, it gives a nice rumble at idle and a the good VROOOOOM
sound we all like. 8) All for $380 not too bad i think...
