BEST RTV SEALANT FOR TIMING CHAIN COVER AND TRANSMISSION PANS???'s

I use what ever non-hardening is around for the timing chain cover since I usally only buy the better brand name stuff. Now for the transmission pan gasket I never used any RTV or sealant as there is always that fear some could end up on the inside & make it's way into the circuits. Used to have a nice size can of good ol' GAA (Grease, Automotive Artillery) & used it to help keep the gasket in place as everything is put back together. Never had a pan leak.

I recently installed a camshaft and used a tiny bit of Ultra Grey all over the timing cover gasket, and more at the oil pan seam. The Right Stuff is everyone's choice because it's essentially a quick-set version of the other stuff.

"Black RTV can flex, allowing it to retain its bonds between two different material types that will heat and cool at different speeds. Grey RTV has higher density when cured for higher vibration resistance and tight tolerance applications. Red RTV is for exhaust and high heat applications." - 4lowmagazine

Though I've used RTV sealer on more than one transmission pan gasket I've had much, much better luck just using a good gasket. My current cork gasket with RTV is leaking and will be replaced with a steel core rubber unit. transmission fluid can attack the RTV and you don't want small pieces of it getting pumped into the tiny passages of the valve body. Permatex and others offer transmission specific sealers if you wish to use one.

For the timing cover I use a good fel-pro gasket and brush on permatex brand high tack. I also use it on the water pump, fuel pump gaskets and around the water ports on the intake gaskets. I’ve never had one leak. Ultra grey is my go to for RTV. I usually don’t use anything on a transmission pan. That’s probably why I usually have a leak. 😂. I have used anerobic sealant with good results for transmission gaskets.

I will never use anything but LubeLocker gaskets on transmissions and rear axle covers any more...they are absolutely the best I've ever used. Other than the cases where you can get a factory OEM metal/rubber hybrid like I think you mentioned. I had issues with every type of gasket on my Hughes Deep Aluminum 700R4 pan, cork, cellulose, thin film of RTV on both, MOROSO blue rubber, etc.., every one leaked around the gasket rail.

LubeLocker been on both trans pan and rear end cover for several years, no more stains on my garage floor 🙂

Transmission pans aren't supposed to have sealer just the rubber or cork gasket ( composite) I know if you do use it put it micro thin , I do use ultra grey or blue) on timing covers .don't over tighten everything just tight ...
