I heard with the amount of ethanol in gas now the shelf life is greatly reduced.

That is correct - it also causes harm to rubber components in the fuel system, unlike plain old gasoline.

Last time I took my tank out it had maybe two gallons in it. You'd be surprised how unwieldy that thing is with fuel sloshing around in there.

However you empty it, be careful, try to do it outside, the vapors are HIGHLY explosive.

i found that by elevating the rear even slightly and pulling the fuel line from the main line to the carb, the tank will pretty well drain itself. there will be some fuel left but when you refill the tank it be be fine.
EDIT: that should be the line between the main and the fuel pump

We did it this way to make the pump constantly pump gas so it would drain out of the tank. The fuel pump only pumps gas for like 2-3 seconds since that is all the gas that is needed to start an engine.. So we wanted it to pump gas constantly to drain the tank. So It was simple and easy to do if you know what your doing.

Your assuming he has an electric fuel pump. This doesn't work if he has a mechanical pump.

Although he could just unhook the fuel line from the carb and start turning over the engine and let the fuel pump empty the tank into a fuel container.

i used an old shop vac to empty the tank on my 79 cutlass. took all of five minuets, the gas did wield the plastic connections together. i'm just lazy that way, shade tree -101.
