BF Goodrich RWL tires

I found this on a Corvette forum. I hope newer BFG’s don’t have this problem. Guess I should have used Google before posting....

“I also have "Goodrich" Radial T/As that are about a year old and will not stay white regardless of cleaning technique. For the record Michelin acquired BF Goodrich several years ago. Somewhere in the transition, probably because Michelin doesn't produce many, if any white lettered tires, they include what they referred to as an ozone protection package in the chemistry of the rubber compound. A side effect of this protection package is that the letters turn brown within a couple weeks of cleaning and get to where they flat out won't come clean. Michelin says that eventually, like after 1,000 miles, the effects of the protection chemicals will wear off and the white will become white again, though also say they'll replace them if you prefer, though assuming replacement tires will do the same, whats the point? Wesleys, Comet, Degreasers and other strong detergents don't work for crap once the letters have turned brown, as one person replied, the only thing that works is to wet sand them, I find 100-120 grit works pretty well, it will take about 25 minutes per tire to carefully resurface the letters to restore them back to white, though I can tell you, the brown will come back in about a month.”

Maybe 3 years ago I bought the McKee's 37 Tire & Rubber Rejuvenator, part of the reason I bought it was the company's claim of how long an application will last. For sure I've used it at least once and was satisfied with how the tires looked for the rest of the season (application was maybe that June?) but don't remember on which vehicle -- for certain it was either the BFG T/As on the Cutlass Supreme or the redlines on the Mustang

It seems to be luck of the draw. My T/A's are only a couple of years old, 2 different years and 14" sizes and still come decently white. I think the Cooper Cobra are also a decent tire and will be giving them a shot on the 70S, currently have the black walls out on the 275/60R15 Cooper Cobra's.

I put a set of cooper cobras on my Malibu this year and I’m happy with them. I had them on there before, but they were 20 years old. It was time to replace them.
I had bfgs on my truck, but when they merged with Michelin, they got too expensive. I went with generals, and I actually like them better. Sometimes it pays to try something new. Just ordered a set of coopers for the wife’s Acura. Like to try something new.

Wesley's was sold out years ago. Good news on that subject though, found out last year from a friend on a painting forum that purple power degreaser, which you can buy in up to 5 gal containers, is same main chemical for much cheaper.

I used to be big on the BFG rwl's, sounds like all that remains the same is the name. That being said, may be another option though. Racing Tire Stickers - Letter Kit (tredwear.com)

I like coopers. They dont like Iowa winters. My previous set split the circumference of the tire on the sidewall on 3 of the 4 after I drove it in some -30*f weather.
other than that they have a good deep tread pattern and are really grippy. you can kind of tell just feeling them by hand, but they feel grippy. wet weather they're about as good as any tire. they do ok in the snow. plus the snake on the black side is dope.

Regarding the yellowing, I clean my car all the time so I never noticed it. But brake dust and road grime come right off with that bleche wite and a stiff brush.

It's the universe trying to tell you that white letters don't belong on tires.....

Agreed! I used to be a big fan of them back when I was young. Then I realized that all you're doing is giving the tire company free advertising for the life of the tires, after you've already forked over an arm and a leg to pay for them. Besides, they look stupid when rolling about 15 mph, like the tire is out of round. It's blackwalls on everything for me regardless of make, model or year.

The original was the best for white walls and lettering the new formula sucks I run black walls on everything
