People who go shopping but have no money.

Over the last 2 decades I've probably sold 30 cars and countless other items through classified ads. I price my stuff fair but firm -- and I'm up front about it. I go out of my way to honestly describe the item over the phone or ( ) via texts and email so that there are no surprises. The reason I do that is because it irritates me when I'm told by a seller how great something is only to find out it was grossly misrepresented when I drive to see it.
I've had my Westfalia listed for less than a week and had TONS of calls and texts on it. (Seriously, who goes car shopping via text message?) There have been 3 parties that came to look at it and all of them have followed the same exact script.
1. "I've been looking at/for these for a while".
2. "You have a really nice one." or "This is the nicest one I've seen in person."
3. They have all brought their kids to crawl all over it.
4. They all had to see everything work, pop the top, lay the beds out, light the stove, swap the tables, etc.
5. 2 out of 3 actually broke something and pretended not to notice. I said nothing hoping to make the sale.
6. Insisted on a test drive -- long one. Usually they drive it much harder than necessary.
7. Upon returning from said test drive rave about how well it runs and nicely it drives.
8. Tell me that I'm priced right but...

A. "I need to sell my car first."
B. "I need to talk to the bank about a personal loan."
C. "I'm trying to refinance my house. Hopefully I'll have enough to make you an offer."

I also had 3 phone conversations with a guy from Canada. From the very beginning I explained that my price was firm. Then we exchanged probably 50 texts. I sent him 3 videos and 20+ pics of things he specifically requested. He tells me that it looks and sounds great and is exactly what he's been looking for. Then he schedules a time to drive down and do the deal. In all, I probably spent 2 hours on this transaction. Last night I get a text asking what my bottom dollar was. I reminded him that the price was firm. Then he lays on the "I have to travel, sales tax, import fees, inspection fees, blah blah blah" and offers me 2K less. Said that's all he could afford. Really? Thanks for wasting my time.

Maybe it's just the VW crowd, I don't know. Obviously I don't expect that if someone calls or comes to see a car they will automatically buy it. But if a buyer makes me go through all the motions, they should at least have some actual cash in their pocket.

I think people love to waste peoples' time. They either have nothing better to do, or equate shopping for a used vehicle to window shopping...tire kicking. You don't want to insult anyone, but now I see why guys are upfront to a potential buyer.
If you don't have the money, don't go shopping.

The same applies to parts shoppers. Guys PM, or e-mail you for a shipping quote. You get the part packaged up, weighed, and get a shipping quote. You relay the info to the "perspective" buyer and never hear back from them again.
Instead of replying back and thanking you for the quote, etc. What ever happened to common courtesy.

I will say he was very polite though. That's how I knew he was a real Canadian and not a Nigerian prince  .

I hate that B.S.
I just sold my old wheels and tires and I kept getting this excuse "I gotta get my taxes done and get my refund before I can buy the wheels". :blam:

For some reason people just can't wrap their heads around the concept that You can't spend money you don't have.

Online classifieds just make it too easy, and its really easy to flake out in this world where time is not precious anymore, and no one has any of it. In the past where you actually had to call, or wait for the stupid dial up to send an e-mail for something it was like you earned it, so you werent likely to waste it. It was like a well kept secret, so finding it and buying it was like finding treasure. Now, everyone has access to it with the click of a button, and its just too easy to browse and waste other people's time because youre bored.

Ive had to change the way I sell for people from online classifieds.

Basically i dont go out of my way to try and over sell it. Its here, and the price is clear, so either you buy it or stop wasting my time. I have no patience for people destroying my stuff after a guy came to look at my firebird, then snapped the interior handle into two, and just kinda handed it to me with no remorse or apology. When I told him I expected him to pay for it or replace it, his comment was, oh its old brittle plastic, it was bound to happen. So im not shy about telling people to lay off MY car/stuff. If they cant respect that, too bad.

Someone really interested in buying it, is likely going to start treating it like THEIR property even before they've bought it.

For test drives, if they really want one, I ask if they have insurance, and to see their papers before I hand them the keys. It does nothing, but it makes them think twice about driving it stupidly.

My $0.02.

Another thing about test drives, if you are conciously selling a vehicle, MAKE SURE the fuel tank is almost empty, and have a small gas can handy just incase.

If they see the fuel is empty, they are more likely to go around the block rather than on the other end of town to visit cousin bill and show him what hes thinking of buying with no money.

I don't know about you guys but if someone wanted to test drive a car I'm selling if they don't want me to go with them then they aren't test driving it...

I hate when this happens...
