If it wasn't for cell phones women would rule the world
Man, does that hit the nail on the head. Back in the '70's I was delivering Mail in an apartment house neighborhood and saw a woman tuning up her Jaguar right at the curb. I asked why she was doing that and she almost bit my head off yelling "Who the HELL else is gonna do it?!?" Those were the days! But lately I have seen counter people trying hard to please. If they don't know they run for the guy that does. Competition? Few Mom n' Pops left so I guess the chains are feeling pressure. Lastly, I was at the Jeep stealership last month and the parts guy wanted my VIN before he could help me. Sad, just sad. .

this the new norm now, as all the stealerships and manufacturer online sites do this... it's actually a good thing in my eyes, as it pinpoints everything that that vehicle was built with, an electronic build sheet, so to speak. with all the available options, split build dates, half year builds, etc, it narrows down the list to help get you the right part...

I have no issue giving info that is relevant to finding a part but if I walk in with a v-belt and tell them I need this size for a custom application and then they still want vehicle info they end up looking at me funny when I say "It's for a 95' Ford F350 diesel vacuum pump that is mounted to a 565 Big Block Chevy that is installed in a 83' Monte Carlo".

Bonus points if Paige is cute!

My best local parts counter guy here in town has worked at a couple stores and I have always gone out of my way to work with him. He also happens to have a Monte Carlo and we have swapped parts back and forth over the years. He goes to shows, will deliver parts to my home on occasion and is just a normal young car guy. Service means the world when the alternative is shopping online and avoiding it all together.

Oh yes,Paige is indeed cute.
I always flirt a bit with her and tell her she looks lovely !!!

It irks me when these counter guys only know what the computer tells them and nothing past that. I say, customer service isn't what it used to be, but ive found a diamond on the rough at my local O'Reilly auto parts. Shout out to my hero Michelle, who learned where all the parts are and how they work to keep a diy shade tree mech's MC on the road

I went to a parts store in the late 90's to order a intake manifold gasket for a Pontiac engine and they ended up ordering one for a small block chevy. When I went to get it I could tell right away it was wrong put the counter guy insisted that it was correct. I went and talked to a engine builder I knew and bought the correct one and went back to the parts store to show them what the correct one looks like.

MOST of the time this is true. However, I have a freshly painted Infiniti bumper cover at my bench at work that is incorrect for the car, and the salesguy swears it is what Infiniti says the car should have. Couple photos of the car convinced him otherwise. Still our fault to some degree because there was a breakdown in the process, parts guy didn't visually verify part to car before handing it off to the paint shop (also never told me it was received, as I usually like to verify this stuff myself)..

This happens from time to time, but on the whole, the VIN usually gets you a lot better results, especially given the plethora of running changes in production vehicles these days.
