Depends on the engine they have, although the 97 Camaro SS was still kinda hard to find even when new. SLP Engineering (aka SLP) was a Tier 1 suppler upfitter for GM from 1992-2002 for the F-body platform, founded by former Mopar racer Ed Hamburger from Hamburger's Oil Pan fame. SLP made 957 Camaro SS's in 1997. With that, they made a handful (108 as mentioned) of the LT4 engine cars that SLP converted. 330 HP with an MSRP of around $40K. So if he has one of the 100, then he's got something there. I did test drive an LT4 Corvette in 1996 and at the time, it was the shiznit. (All 4th gen Camaro SS's, including the 30th and 35th anniversary editions, were at the hands of SLP from the Z28. Chevy never made an actual 4th Gen Camaro SS for sale to the public. Kind of the way Hurst/Olds was converted [except for 1979 of course]). After 1997, GM's new LS1 found its way into the Camaro and SLP didn't have to swap any more engines to make power, making them semi-affordable. The cars were built at Ste. Therese and shipped down the road to SLP's conversion facility where Z28s ended up as SS's. This continued to the end of the 4th gen Camaro. My wealthy friend's dad had one of the SLP 4th gen Camaros; they built 400(?) of them. Stuck it in his garage/museum, and had to put a whole new fuel system in it 10 years later.
EDIT: After doing a little digging, it was/is (don't know if they still have it) a 1997 30th Anniversary that Wiki says they built 108 of- 100 in the US, 6 to Canadia, and 2 prototypes.
SLP numbered their SS's. I had 2002 #6906 out of 11,191. It was one of 403 2002 Lt. Pewter coupes with a 6-speed MT. Still, when you compare it with my Crystal Red Tintcoat 2013 ZL1 convertible, only 54 were made with a 6-speed MT in that color (170 Crystal Red convertible ZL1s for 2013 total). There were only 1,917 ZL1 convertibles total in 2013.
Those 4th gen cars were a lot of fun. To combat the wife trying to drive a stick, we got her a "matching" 2002 Z28 with an automatic.
SLP and GM teamed up in 1991 to produce the 1992 Firebird Firehawk. Extensively modified with a list price of over $50K. The rest they say, is history.
SLP morphed into what's known today as Specialty Vehicle Engineering.
