That is what I did with my first engine rebuild 28 years ago, and luckily an old timer was watching, and flipped my wires and she popped right off. He, however, suggested that I leave it that way, just to mess with the next guy who might work on it. 😀

I think it's easier to turn the distributor 180* than to switch all the wires....just saying

How hard is it to pull and replace 8 boots on top a dist cap. Unless you mean just spinning the dist 180, not pulling and reinstalling
 
the worst part about installing a distributor is getting the key to line up....removing the cap and raising the distributor a little to rotate it 180* which means the key is lined up is easier than reversing the wires
 
Your dizzy is off. Find TDC on the compression stoke with the spark plug off and line up your tdc mark, then set you dizzy in. The rotor should point towards the #1 piston when it fires for #1 and your vacuum advance should be on the far passenger side on the dist. right next to transmission dipstick. If it doesn't you need to slightly lift up the dizzy and gently turn it counter-clockwise until it falls back in. You will feel the teeth while it turns so be gentle. Do this until the rotor points in the right direction. Sometimes the dizzy won't line up with the oil pump shaft and it will not set your dizzy in the right spot. This should get you close enuff for a timing light adjustment.

I guess I maybe underestimating the extreme effort involved with unplugging/replugging 8 wires.(sarcasm)

I don't know what the engine compartment looks like on your car but my plug wires are nicely bound in place and I'd have to take them apart in order to relocate them on the cap. Also if the distributor is 180* off then not only do you have to lift the distributor to turn it you then have to change the wires once again and then I'd have to tie up the plug wires again. I can turn my distributor 180* in about a minute so I think that is alot quicker and less work. I like to do a job just once and to do it properly. I have never heard of changing the wires around to correct an issue with the distributor and that's probably cause I have never met you....no sarcasm
 
I allways position my distributors so I can get the most travel possible for turning it. On a Pontiac that usually means the vacuum advance is pointing at the AC box and #1 plug terminal is pointing at the firewall where the throttle cable comes through. Works for me.
