I'm happy to see you busted out the tools and fixed it. Well done. Now try different combinations of timing and carb adjustments until it gives the best performance. The factory set things up to operate best under a certain set of conditions. Once you start changing things- it is on you to get things right. But that is what makes this "hobby" so much fun!

It did not look any worse for the wear, but I will check it the next time it is off. I really need a better timing light to see what my advance curve is but it is okay for now. I have got a feeling that I need an adjustable vacuum advance that I can turn down a little, but other than that the distributor seems to match the combo well.

On the down side, I did find a coolant leak between the head and block on the passenger side so the head gasket may need changed. It will get there one day...

check your heater hoses to make sure there isn't a pin hole leaving some coolant on in that area...

Do you have one of these. They are notorious for rotting and leaking on the passenger side.

I have the black inline one on mine, i can see the wet spot right at the bottom of the head under the front 3 head bolts. It was a weekend thrash to get the motor together, so I might have just not got the block scraped clean enough.

I usually put some of this on both sides of the gasket as a just in case precaution.

Yeah, that was one of those things that I should have used but did not want to make another run to town to get. Worst case scenario, it wont be 15 degrees and icy out the next time the heads come off. I did retorque the three bolts around the leak and got a little bit more out of them, so it might seal up on its own.

After running a few tanks through, I ended up gaining about 1.5 mpg. Up to 16.5 from 15. It's a shame the head will be coming off for a reseal soon.
