Changing Color on Rubber Horn Button

The console lid and armrest for the Camaro were made out of rubber. Not plastic. Not vinyl.
Go to a PEP Boys store, get an aerosol can of Bulldog and an aerosol can of SEM Color Coat from a body shop supplier and try spraying the back of it to see if its compatible.

What color do you want to dye it and what style horn button?

It's going in my 87 442. The wheel is off of a tan interior

I should be more clear. The horn button has the horn plate in the rear and the emblem disk in front. To paint it I would remove them. They are both under a lip that holds them in. To put it back together I would have to flex the piece quite a bit. I'm worried about flaking and cracking the top coat when I do it.

Thanks. I may try that and see how the back of the button (hidden part) does when dried and manipulated. Never heard of Bulldog before. Thanks for the tip.

Hard button to find.

I know about the bending to get the insert in because I had to do it on my GM rope wheel.

What about taping off the center to paint it, until you find the correct color horn button so you don't have to worry about it cracking?

With the amount of bending you have to do to get the center insert installed anything you put on it will crack.

There wasn't a dark grey interior in that time frame when that steering wheel was made (not to my knowledge anyways). The cracking will be the issue. This is why the plasti dip looks promising.

I know this isn't what you want, but maybe an alternative if what you want doesn't work out?

Sometimes we get so focused on one thing when there are other options out there.

If you use the plasi dip I am eager to see if it worked!!

Good luck!

Some of the sport model regardless of interior color used a black wheel.

Now that I think about it, where can I get SEM paint in our 442 grey matching color? Is there already an established paint code?

G-Body Parts used to sell it from what I've heard, now they sell RestoMatch

Anyone have experience with this paint? I've always heard that SEM was the way to go.

I cant say that Im an expert with SEM but Ive done quite a few pieces with it over the past few years. You can see the work Ive done on my 83 Malibu wagon and also my 81 Malibu coupe.
That being said I can tell you its a great product to use. If you want an EXACT color match SEM offers a free color matching service. I sent one of my rear door panels down to them because the local body shop supply couldnt get a match after multiple attempts. Their match was perfect. Sad to say but the color I originally needed didnt work out for me because ACC discontinued the matching OEM carpet color.
I decided to try a color they offer in an aerosol can called Presidio Grey. Its VERY close to the factory grey that GM used in the mid 80s. I liked the color so much I had SEM match the aerosol color and bought a gallon directly from them instead of trying to get the local supplier to mix it. I wound up respraying all the interior plastic for the wagon and I bought grey 86 OEM Olds cloth from SMS Auto Fabrics for my seats.
If you decide to use Color Coat and need any info on its use or prep feel free to contact me. I'd be glad to help. Like I said, Im not an expert or professional but Ive done a lot of parts so far and nothings peeling. LOL

Last can of SEM I bought I got from Eastwood

I have always used SEM for my interior paints but for my Regal I just wanted a can of matching paint to do my trio gauge panel but it was not available through SEM so I bought a can from Gbodyparts and sprayed my panel and it was a good match to my original dash, I wouldn't hesitate to use it again.
The below picture is before mounting it to the dash.
